Gatlinburg is a fun place to visit in a beautiful natural setting. Asheville has such attributes as well, but so much more depth and substance. From my perspective, this was an extremely easy choice.
i typically don't get my opinions from a dictionary.
some people would say there are a lot of tacky people in Asheville.
Probably. Lot of cool people too. I used to play in a blues band and we played a lot of bars in the Carolinas. I remember a joint in Asheville that was pretty cool. Old style roadhouse on the edge of town called 45 Cherry Street I think it was. The people drank a lot and partied hard. But no chicken wire or fights. Nice people. There's no place like that in Gatlinburg.
Completely different places, with Gatlinburg being a pretty small resort town (more mileage if Chattanooga was selected instead of Gatlinburg). Asheville is much more of a conventional small city with features and things to do akin to a midsize city.
There's no need to get defensive, CV. Tourists vote with their feet and Sevier county had 12 million tourists in 2017 vs 4 million for Asheville. I suspect less than half of those set foot in Gatlinburg but just looking at the number of hotels I'll guess Gatlinburg has more visitors than Asheville.
