One thing I'm curious about with Austin is transportation, it has a lot of development going on but it doesn't seem like it has any plans for a light rail network or really any significant rail network to handle its growth. Kind of surprised, thought Austin would be a bit better in the public transit area. San Diego has some pretty ambitious plans to expand it's rail and public transit network in the future.
Well your right about the light rail plans for Austin, but the city does have commuter rail. Also Austin has added several new trains as well as expanding new tracks to handle the growth.
Hmmm tough one. Brightest future probably goes to Austin by default simply because it has been going through a tremendous growth spurt.
Nightlife...I'm not sure I'd say that Austin has the better nightlife, although I'll will say it's probably watered-down from what it used to be.
If I had a choice and COL wasn't a factor, I'd pick San Diego. I did Austin in the early 90's and loved it. Yet, the things that made Austin great back then are not the things defining it today. When the uniqueness factor of a citiy becomes too marketed or mainstream, it tends to lose its je ne sais quoi (at least for me).
Though I was impressed with my visit to Austin, I voted for San Diego. Growth-wise, Austin. Cost of living, Austin. But like someone else said, everything else, San Diego. There is a reason they call it America's Finest City, the weather is perfect 98% of the time, the beaches, the mountains, the palm tress (OK yes, Austin has a few palm trees too), and just the laid back vibe in a major CA city. However, Austin is probably my favorite Texas city as it seems more politically progressive and more accepting than the big two or three.
