Austin vs San Diego city vs city version (live, state, better)

Which of the 2 has the brighter future? Better nightlife? Current and proposed projects? Liveliest downtown?

Austin probably has a brighter future growth wise as San Diego is very expensive and relatively built out so that will limit growth. Austin seems to have much more room and potential for expansion. San Diego is a better city imo though, just pricey.

San Diego is expanding Legoland, while Austin is building a surf park with electronically controlled waves (and neon glow in the dark water for night surfing), both cities are adding or expanding cultural institutions, educational institutions, government institutions, adding foreign flag carriers and airlines services, gaining foreign investment, so on and so forth. They are also both building even more mid-rises than they are building high-rises or skyscrapers, so this list doesn't do either city justice but gives an idea of some of the high-profile projects that will change the skylines and cityscapes in both cities (or at least enhance the skylines or cityscapes). Both cities are also expanding retail options and gaining new retailers at a torrid pace too. All around boom.

Two of my favorite cities actually, I actually like San Diego more than any of the other California cities and Austin more than any of the other Texas cities. Oddly, they have that in common -- I like each more than their bigger sibling cities in their states (Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, and Houston).

The Empire State Building and Chrysler Building are likely there for scale or fun.

One thing I'm curious about with Austin is transportation, it has a lot of development going on but it doesn't seem like it has any plans for a light rail network or really any significant rail network to handle its growth. Kind of surprised, thought Austin would be a bit better in the public transit area. San Diego has some pretty ambitious plans to expand it's rail and public transit network in the future.
