I'm commenting here.... because that streetview360°. REMINDS ME SO MUCH OF PHILADELPHIA STREETS. They are that narrow just downtown alone, and many throughout the city....

Oh and their UNENDING Row home blocks. CAN BE NICE IF YOU LIKE THAT CLOSENESS.

I don't boast for Philly.... Row homes are not my favorite. But that Mexico City street so NARROW TOO... Made me think PHILLY HAS THAT... Not to change the subject off topic.

I just don't understand? Why a street has to be NARROW and homes together. FOR SOME To be URBAN?

URBANITY does not have to be claustrophobic it can have front green space and some green in back too. LIKE MY FAVORITE CITY CHICAGO.
But I would say Mexico City is underrated.... in the States you almost never here about its SIZE in North America, or anything about it.

Clearly as you already know, Philadelphia was developed hundreds of years before Chicago. This is why I think Philadelphia resembles some European cities because of how dense and close everything is aside from the major thoroughfares.

I guess Mexico City is underrated in many ways, but I don't feel as if it is being overlooked on bad perception alone. There are real serious problems with that town. Yeah, sure it's dense, but so is Manila (a city very similar to Mexico City...and way denser) and that doesn't really mean anything. Cities are more than just tight streets and how many people you pack in to a space.

Toronto on the other hand is totally underrated, especially it is overshadowed by two smaller cities (Vancouver and Montreal) in many circles. It's a great city that has a lot going for it and is very cosmopolitan.

To be honest I don't really think Toronto is underrated vs Montreal and Vancouver or really underrated as a tourist destination for Americans at all.. It is the most visited city in Canada by Americans easily.. I also read it is the 5th most popular International destination for American tourists after Cancun, London, San Juan and Paris...

http://www.today.com/parents/where-d...utside-6232354

In 2014 Toronto welcomed over 2.3 million U.S overnight visitors alone (not including day visits).. Montreal and Vancouver don't post those numbers

Don't get me wrong - I appreciate your accolades but the visitor numbers show that in terms of feet on ground vs other cities - it is not underrated but sure - we always love to have more of you so come up - now is a great time as the USD stretches a lot farther these days.

Yes I surely know. Center City Philly dates way back. Some aspects in Colonial Neighborhoods preserved. That is also valid for Mexico City. The thread has mentioned.

You have to admit... that Mexico City streetview360° Does look similar to Philly's. But as I noted before in threads. PHILLY CHOSE to continue many Tight Row Home blocks. Well into the 20th century. When other cities DID NOT. I noted Just Chicago's Bungalow belt began in 1910. As we know... it is not Row Homes to the sidewalk and curb.

Its just fact. For Center City a Grid centuries old is noteworthy. But when Philly CHOSE to continue them WELL INTO the 20th CENTURY? It was NOT BECAUSE OF THE ERA AND BLOCKS AGE....

Examples; PHILADELPHIA 1920s Neighborhood examples on 1930.
Chose some Random block streetview360° chose a home and checked Redfin Real Estate for any former listing of a sale FOR DATE BUILT

Random streetview360°
https://www.google.com/maps/@39.9199...7i13312!8i6656 Chose home on right stood out with Summer decorations. Typed in address on Redfin Real Estate. Because I know they give the DATE HOME WAS BUILT.
Redfin https://www.redfin.com/PA/Philadelph.../home/39200047 SAYS BUILT IN 1925

Another;
https://www.google.com/maps/@39.9130...7i13312!8i6656 Chose home on right again decorated for summer.
Redfin https://www.redfin.com/PA/Philadelph.../home/39201800 SAYS BUILT IN 1930.

Another
https://www.google.com/maps/@39.9199...7i13312!8i6656 CHOSE HOME ON RIGHT TO CHECK YEAR BUILT.
Redfin https://www.redfin.com/PA/Philadelph.../home/39003810 BUILT 1925

YOU BRING UP CHICAGO. Knowing I preferred it. Very few Row homes.....In the 1920s. It's BUNGALOW Belt was well under way. Quaint AMERICAN STYLED Homes for the emerging middle-class.

Examples; Chicago's Bungalow belt built 1910-1940. 1/3 of the city today. This block 1920s.

https://www.google.com/maps/@41.9368...7i13312!8i6656 CHOSE HOUSE ON RIGHT TO DATE.

Its Alleys in back

Redfin https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/5239-W-Barry-Ave-60641/home/12556787. SAYS BUILT IN 1924

Another area.
https://www.google.com/maps/@41.9113...7i13312!8i6656 Chose this block having pre-1940s bungalows on left, and 50s Modern that came next on right.

Bungalow on Left
Redfin https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/51.../home/13424104 BUILT 1921

50s style mid-century Modern that replaced the CLASSIC Bungalow. One on right Green.
Redfin https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/51.../home/13424743 SAYS BUILT IN 1951

Bit off topic but a reply to a post anyway....

I'm not sure specifically where Toronto has been underrated. Doesn't seem overrated but doesn't seem like it isn't given what it is due. It would be a mid-tier city were it in the US, on par with Chicago, DC, Bay Area but unable to compete with LA or NYC. That seems to be the general consensus. Mexico City, OTOH, seems very overlooked or unacknowledged for what it is. Not just here on C-D, but in the real world as well.

MC hands down. Toronto is already more closely associated with what it is. Mexico City on the other hand is intense and greatly underrated. It is currently going through a skyscraper building boom as well which is one of the few segments were it faltered in the past when compared to other Canadian and US cities.

They are both wonderful cities and I have spent quite a bit of time in both of them in recent years. On this board and in the real world, I would say DF is massively underrated- it is a spectacular city in terms of food, architecture, vibrancy, cultural amenities, natural environs, an endlessly fascinating, inexhaustible place. Sure there are bad parts but I have never had any reason to go to them. While there are huge chunks of bad poverty, it is also the eighth richest city in the world. There is not a neighborhood in Toronto that can hold a candle to Polanco or Los Lomas. Rosedale would be the closest, but it feels positively country in comparison

While I like Toronto very much, I think it is somewhat over-rated. It is paradoxically a more diverse but more provincial version of Chicago: a great great lakes city. It is indeed safer than DF. but has nothing like the energy, the architecture, the nightlife, the climate, the natural environs, the cultural institutions of Mexico City. If you combine Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, you would have a megacity that would be the Canadian equivalent of DF.
