People always try to discredit these lists by saying how expensive most of the places in the top 10 are but pretty much everyone I know in the DC area makes a nice amount and lives extremely comfortably despite the high CoL.

People wouldn't be flocking to these places if their salaries didn't outweigh the CoL so works out for most.

Well, it's the main reason (COL/jobs) that people have been flocking to sun belt/southern metros. Some prefer places like DC (I do) to places like Houston, but the bulk are moving, as usual, where there are jobs and where their dollar stretches.

I may be wrong but the people flocking to these low COL areas are people who do not have professional careers that pay high $$ premium in high COL areas, but at the same time not poor enough to get a government subsidy. The COL of a poor person in an expensive place like NYC is very cheap, since they are obviously not paying market rate and are renting for like $300 a month or whatever living in subsidized housing.

I see a lot of capital area metros and smaller areas not too far from a major metro.

I'm dead at the fact that the 4 largest "southern" metros are like dead tied and far behind all of their peers up north and out west in this regard.

It's both sad and a realistic measure of how far the South has to go. COL is lower, true, but money is money. Los Angeles hands down fares the worst. 18 million people and playing with featherweights (in their eyes, not mine) from the South. Lol.

The Los Angeles MSA has 12 million people not 18 million. The Los Angles median family income is dragged down by a large population of poorer immigrants.

How? I'm skeptical of cost of living comparisons. What type of home should be compared? An apartment? a 2000 square foot house? Where in the metro? People in different metro areas don't always buy the same thing either.
