Vegas/LA, simply because of the weather. Noone's gonna wanna sightsee and stand around outside for too long on a NYC/Philly winter day. In LA and Vegas, youll enjoy the mild weather, and be able to hit up theme parks like Knotts Berry Farm, Disneyland, the beach (will be too cold to swim), etc. Plus, Vegas has seemingly ENDLESS entertainment, all located close to each other, so you dont have to drive all over Timbuktu to see the sights. Plus youll have the palms and mountains which lend a cool vibe to any vacation, IMO.
I am planning a trip for my birthday and I have 10 days available and it came down to these two options. Five day in NYC and five in Philly or five days in LA and five in Vegas? In terms of things to do like attractions, museums, nightlife, galleries, food(high end and local/street food), and other things that tourists would do. Where would you rather spend 10 days and/or which pair would you recommend to someone else? I have only personally visited NYC, but that was as a youngster so all cities will be a new experience for me.
Edit: My apologies, as the thread title should say 10 day trip, not day trip.
Depends on when your birthday is. The weather on the East Coast has been pleasant this fall (we're looking at a high of 67 on Sunday) but I wouldn't expect that to last long.
I'd probably choose the LA/Vegas combination just to get some warm weather days in.
10 days seems like too much time for either pair. I'd spend 6 days in LA and 4 days in Vegas. If I chose NYC/Philly, I'd do 8 in NYC and 2 in Philly. But if I had 10 days, then I'd try to get around to either Boston or DC instead of spending all of my time in just 2 cities.

Lots of people go sightseeing in NYC on winter days. This is probably one of the busiest times of the year in terms of tourist volume.
Vegas gets pretty cold. It's actually warmer in NYC today than it is in Vegas. While Vegas doesn't get as cold as NYC, it's cold enough to impact your Vegas experience. None of the hotel pools will be open, which is a big part of Vegas, at least for me.
Easily NY and Philly for me
I really like Los Angeles and I don't mind spending a week there, but Las Vegas would bore me quickly. NYC is my favorite city to visit by far. However, I really love some areas in Los Angeles like Santa Monica, Sunset and Hollywood blvd. I just don't like Vegas that much.
I agree from what someone else said, SF and LA would be a better comparison. Philly is cool. Used to date someone from there, but I could never spend a whole week there. You could do Center city and the rest of downtown in a day. You don't need a week for that. Many Philly neighborhoods are unsafe, and if you aren't from there, I am not sure that you would know where exactly to go outside of downtown.
Don't get Vegas at all. Garish and vulgar. It's the Donald Trump of cities.
More the Lady Gaga of cities...Gaga done by Frank Marino...
