In the spirit of the City (metro) Rivalry thread, I'm curious as to others' thoughts on which metros have the most intense city/regional/county rivalries WITHIN...
Not really thinking of inner city vs. suburb rivalry, since that's pretty much everywhere.
I'll start with my home metro (Kansas City), with Johnson County, KS, against the rest of the KC metro.
There's the aforementioned obligatory city vs. suburb friction with inner city KCMO fighting suburbs, both within the city proper, and on both sides of the Kansas - Missouri state line.
However, things take another twist when you start talking about Johnson County, KS, in particular:
The friction against the inner city from the Missouri side suburbs is pretty much like what one would find in many cities but it seems MUCH more abrasive from Johnson Co. In addition to having a reputation for being militantly elitist toward inner city KCMO, Johnson Co also has a reputation for looking down toward the rest of the KC Metro in general.
Although this attitude does NOT describe the majority of Johnson Co residents, much of the leadership and a STRONG vocal minority interacts with and describes the rest of both sides of the KC metro in a manner such that this comes across as them thinking that they're the richest, safest, nicest, and best suburb in the history of suburban development, despite the fact that most Missouri side (and other areas on KS side outside Johnson Co) suburban areas compare rather favorably to Johnson Co in Kansas in terms of good schools, low crime, income, cleanliness, and everything else folks want from a suburb. To be fair, Johnson Co is rather nice, orderly, clean, safe, and has many upscale areas. The problem is those adjectives can apply to most of Metro KC's suburban areas outside Johnson Co, as well. This perceived (and, at times, real) elitist attitude from Johnson Co often rubs the rest of the KC Metro the wrong way and creates a rather interesting dynamic between Johnson Co KS, and the rest of the KC Metro area on both sides of the state line.
The shifting of corporate jobs from downtown KCMO to far reaches of suburban Johnson Co (and historical/continued lack thereof in downtown KCK), often with STATE-backed corporate subsidies further exacerbates this dynamic. The KC Metro forum resembles a rather entertaining soap opera, playing out this "rivalry" as one or both of these issues are often the center of MANY debates about important regional issues.
So, I nominate Johnson County, KS, vs. the rest of metro KC as among the more intense intra-metro city/region rivalries I've observed.
Dallas vs. Fort Worth, and North Side vs. South/West sides of Chicago's city and suburbs are honorable mentions.
San Francisco and Oakland, Dallas and Fort Worth, Tampa and St. Petersburg, Brooklyn and Queens...I have no clue.
