I know Baltimore has a negative image, but the downtown area and many surrounding neighborhoods are in a different league than Detroit right now. I know Detroit is starting to come back, but it has a long way to go before it's close to having the thriving neighborhoods and downtown that Baltimore has.
The ghettos of both cities are very comparable though. Both have very rough and dangerous ghettos.

There are still solid to very nice neighborhoods within the city of Detroit and I listed them earlier in the thread. Some street views:
I'm also not sure if Detroit's Downtown is that far off, if at all in comparison. It has always had some vibrancy and it is ever increasing.
Thanks for the links. I know about those areas. I was more specifically talking about more urban neighborhoods more adjacent to downtown. Baltimore has areas like Fells Point, Federal Hill, Harbor Point, Canton, Mt Vernon etc. While Detroit is seeing progress, especially with starting to see vacant buildings renovated, Baltimore is many years ahead of Detroit with very few large downtown structures that are vacant and tons of new construction including a couple of residential skyscrapers. There are also some large office towers in the works and they are finishing up a new office tower for Exelon and will soon break ground on a massive office tower complex for Under Armour. There is also way more people in Downtown Baltimore at any given time from my experience. I was just in Detroit for several ball games. Love the city and would love for it to come back and I think it will but even with the reputation that Baltimore has, they have a lot going on.

I would say that Corktown, Greektown, the Mexicantown portion of SW Detroit, the Cass Corridor, the Eastern Market and some the Jefferson Corridor including the West Village would be the best bets in terms of more urban neighborhoods of Detroit.

There aren't too many large vacant buildings in downtown Detroit anymore. Just 10 years ago there were about 7 or 8 abandoned skyscrapers now were down to one and that one just got bought out and is about to start renovating sometime soon. But Baltimore will probably always be more urban than Detroit. It's hard to compete with the row house lined streets of Baltimore.
I absolutely adore Detroit and believe it has so much to offer, but I would have to pick Baltimore if given the choice out of the two. Better location, better food, wealthier, ocean accessibility, more historical, better architecture, denser built environment, better weather...etc...I'll stop because im not at all bashing Detroit as I have visited many times and am very much a Detroit supporter!
If you were gifted 10 milllion dollars but the catch is you must live in any of these cities and never leave (suburbs included). Both heavily industrial blue collar towns both suffer from urban blight. Both have large African American population. Both host beautiful suburbs. Which one would you choose and why?
I would choose Baltimore. Proximity to the harbour, great seafood. Also has a casino like Detroit (Jacks Casino used to be called the Horseshoe). Generally cool to mild winters. Beautiful suburbs and architecture. Excellent medical facilities.
I'd move to Detroit...but spend most of my time on vacation.

For metro I believe Detroit is still wealthier unless your combine Baltimore with DC then yeah you'll be right.
