Hello, I know SF is an exciting and fun place, but wondering about the daily grind and family life in SF suburbs (like East Bay) vs Sacramento. Is it difficult to get around with kids, get them to activities/school/doctors/etc in SF suburbs compared to Sacramento? Public transport won’t be an option to take with our kids, so we’d be using a car. As much as I like visiting exciting cities, after getting older, quality of schools, ease of getting to work (and to school, local activities), affordable housing are winning out. In other words, is it much harder living in SF suburbs with kids compared to Sac or similar once you’re out in the burbs? We live in a city with a decent amount of activities and attractions, but they don’t affect our quality of life since we don’t have time to participate.

High housing prices aside, life in suburban SF seems pretty much like suburban life anywhere else—more kids and more kid-friendly than the central city, most people have a car because public transit can be spotty and density is lower, and typically better schools than in the city proper. Obviously any of these factors will vary depending on exactly which suburb one chooses. But overall, from what I’ve seen in my visits to the area, day-to-day life in Bay Area ‘burbs doesn’t seem much different than anywhere else.

Maybe a local can weigh in on the Sacramento ‘burbs, of which I know nothing.
