Just under San Francisco a Tourist Mecca for decades and mighty NYC also for a century.
NYC was blue collar for the first 300 years of its life and was a run-down, nearly-bankrupt cesspool in the 1950's-1980's. Only when the facade of being a place worth visiting was instituted (hammered into international tourists) and Reaganomics unregulated the financial industry in the 1980's did it become what it is today. Oh, and let's not forget the heavy-handed and illegal crime-fighting tactics of the NYPD. If you're white, a tourist, or both, you get by nicely in NYC. If you're anything else, ha.
I assure you, nobody was touring NYC before 1980. It was almost Detroit.
I was a tourist there in the last 80s. It wasn't as expensive or glamorous, but it was NOTHING like today's Detroit. Not until you went out to the South Bronx.

Sticking to the "visiting" aspect of the list, a good over-all list. It's always hard to get a full consensus on about any list. I'm familiar with all of them. The only one I really don't see as a place I'd generally go out of my way to visit (even though I have been there) is Portland. I can see New Orleans and Austin being on here, but New Orleans just isn't my style and Austin I personally found a boring place to visit. No offense, just my opinion........I live in metro Charlotte and an hour and a half from Asheville. My wife and I love visiting regularly. Great people, Blue Ridge PKWY., Biltmore Estate, hiking, rafting, skiing, great restaurants (12 Bones Smokehouse, ahhh), and great art spots. I know some were a bit surprised it was on the list, but I wasn't at all.
