My sister is looking to move with her daughter from the SF Bay Area because it's getting ridiculously expensive. She is a lesbian and her daughter is biracial, and she's really looking for a progressive urban place to live with decent public transport and beautiful scenery, but also affordable. She's come up with the Denver area and the Durham/Carrboro etc area. What are the differences between them in terms of affordability, diversity, progressivism, jobs, culture?
Denver is less expensive than SF, but still more expensive than most American metros. Durham is affordable and the Raleigh/Durham area in general is a good metro area with one of the best economies in the nation.
Durham is in the center of the state, Asheville in the west. Both are great cities for lesbians from what I've heard.
