You could attempt to slow it down with more stop lights, especially on the north branch, but I doubt residents would take it well. Personally I'd put more pedestrians bridges connecting the neighborhoods to the lakefront, update the overpasses, and add bus only lanes. That would at least leave the Drive mostly intact for motorists, give pedestrians better access to the lakefront, and stop express buses from getting clogged in morning traffic.

Becoming something like the current Embarcadero in SF, however, is most likely not in the cards for LSD.
You can also run with the idea that having LSD the way it is induces traffic demand, and changing it to be less of an expressway doesn't mean that traffic will be shunted to elsewhwere but instead would mostly disappear.

I think it makes sense for a bus-only lane, stoplight crossings placed every few "blocks", and improving rail transit (especially the Crossrails Chicago plan).

After living in Chicago for 7 years, and watching traffic nightmare after traffic nightmare erupt on both LSD and local roads due to roadwork on LSD, I'm not holding my breath that traffic will just "disappear." People get warned in advance every time that there's going to be roadwork, and the same thing happens every single time.

One of my most distinct traffic nightmare memories is being stuck on a 146 bus with rerouted LSD traffic that had been routed onto Michigan Ave due to LSD being closed from about Randolph to Oak. It took that bus 30 minutes to travel half a mile, and this was around 9 or 10 at night. I could have walked to the LSD entrance and back in less time than it took that bus to get there.

What makes sense and what will happen are two different things though.

I think we will see an increased boulevardization of the Drive around downtown, but I don't think we'll see major changes on the majority of the north and south branches. Making them look like how LSD does in the Loop would require them to be completely demolished and rebuilt. It would be far cheaper to add the pedestrian bridges, fix up the overpasses, and to paint an express bus only lane. The outer Drive just isn't currently all that integrated to Chicago's grid beyond its exits. What would even work in a neighborhood like Lakeview wouldn't even work just a couple miles to the south in Lincoln Park since the Drive is on the opposite side of Lincoln Park the actual park rather than Inner Lake Shore. The southern branch faces similar problems, in addition to a rail line also separating it from the city.

As for CrossRail, it's being studied, or at least the O'Hare Express portion is. Whether it ever amounts to something, I cannot say. The major CTA project that the city is focused on is the Red Line extension on the South Side.

Can't believe you left out Georgetown and Upper Wisconsin Ave/ Chevy Chase, but otherwise yes.

Yeah, forgot Georgetown. Never been to Upper Wisconsin Avenue.

King Street/Old Town Alexandria also has a few upscale stores as well.

When complete, my compilation should resemble something like this:

//www.city-data.com/forum/city-...ton-miami.html

Except instead of making a thread for Chicago-San Francisco-Toronto-Washington D.C. I will just post it in a post in this thread.

LOL, hopefully I don't have to put out reminders to people in this thread that the shopping list isn't a "versus" comparison but just rather a directory for people to have, use, or reference for their own personal benefit. LOL, I actually had to put out that reminder in the shopping compilation thread for the Southern cities in my new thread.

I wont have to work hard to compile Washington D.C. as it will be featured in both that thread as well as the future post in this thread.

Thank you to those that responded and those that either put together a compilation on last notice as well as those that cited a lengthy compilation from a reliable source.

I appreciate that, thank you.
