What is the most important city in terms of Hard Economic Power, Engineers, and Industrial Base.

I would say Houston the seat of big oil; with every major oil companies operational hq being located in the Houston region, and that oil is the backbone of the modern world; is the most important city in terms of Hard Economic Power.

I would say the same metropolitan areas that dominate either the largest numeric concentrations of STEM professions or the largest percentage concentration of STEM professions (some rare breeds dominate both lists).

Exactly, New York has no Engineering talent given it's size.

I'm not knowledgeable to tell you which cities are the top dogs for hard economic power, but I can expand on engineering though. One of my bachelors degrees were in engineering, which is a field that I cherish and know a lot about.

Here's a great great source for reference on all things engineering (perhaps the best source, bar none);

Which Cities Have the Most Engineers? > ENGINEERING.com

The metropolitan areas in the map above represent America's top 10 in overall concentration of engineering professions (plus they give you details on the pay structure too in each respective market).

I'm going to disagree. I think oil was the backbone of the first 80 years of the twentieth century, the last 30-40 years have been created by computers. It's electrical engineers and software engineers that develop the tech of the future, not some mechanical or chemical engineer in Houston. I voted for the Bay Area. Old school polluting indusry Houston probably wins with Northern Jersey a close second.

^^^ I also think oil is (slowly) declining in importance.

I voted for everything except Atlanta and Miami

Try operating your computers on unreliable wind and solar power, not on the reliable energy sources of: Coal, Oil, Gas & Nuclear.

These two industries (Computers and the Petrochemical) are the backbone of the modern world.

Try doing either of those without food.

See where this logic goes?
