Albany and that whole area seems to be pretty gritty.
The urban areas in that metro are old, but still have a variety of neighborhoods and its share of standard suburbia. With that said, besides Albany; Schenectady, Troy, Cohoes, Watervliet, Rensselaer, Green Island and Waterford can be gritty.
Also, Rochester isn't as gritty as people may think it is, but such areas are there like South Wedge, Beechwood, NOTA(Neighborhood of the Arts), Monroe Village and Maplewood.

FYI to all - would have added others, but didnt want to overwhelm the list. York, PA, Lancaster, PA, Spokane, WA?, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Flint, MI are others for example. Feel free to do write ins.
