LOOK/STYLE:
The vast majority of the housing in the Sherwood Forest/Palmer Woods/University District area are 3000+ sq foot mini-mansions built between the 1920’s-1940’s, while the housing in the Cascade and Audubon areas looks to be newer mini-mansions and sprawling 1950’s ranches. I prefer the older housing of the Detroit neighborhoods.
RECREATION/GREENSPACE:
Palmer Park & Golf Course, a 296-acre park established in the 1890’s. This park includes the 1884 summer log cabin of wealthy senator Thomas Palmer
Cascade/Audubon has several notable greenspaces including the Cascade Springs Nature Preserve, Adams Park, and Lionel Hampton Park
WALKABILITY:
All Detroit streets have sidewalks on both sides of the street, while some streets in the Cascade area don’t have any. University District and Sherwood Forest are adjacent to the charming Livernois Avenue and 7 Mile Road commercial district, the Cascade/Audubon area doesn’t seem to have such a district.
EDUCATION:
The University District is named for the University of Detroit-Mercy, a 5,000 student Catholic Jesuit university on the southern edge of the neighborhood. Also, another small Catholic University , 2,000 student Marygrove College, is a mile to the west.
The Cascade Audubon area is about 4 miles from the HBCU campus
I think a better comparison would be the Sherwood Forest/University District/Palmer Woods area with Atlanta's Buckhead area. Those are kind of like the traditional, old money areas of their respective cities.
There is another neighborhood in that area of Detroit that surrounds the private Detroit Golf Club, called the Detroit Golf Club Estates. See the below link to see what kind of mansions are in this neighborhood.
Does the Cascade/Audubon area have houses like that? IMO, I think that area of Atlanta is more comparable to the Rosedale Park/Grandmont area of Detroit.
