On this list, Kansas City would have been towards the bottom because this list is based on CITIES, not METROS.
If KC gets to add its suburbs in other states, ....Cincinnati (Covington, Newport, Florence, etc) especially, and also several of the other cities with remote parts of metros in other areas.
MierdaCabeza KC is ONE Metro and even just a quick glance at all of these city's "things to Do" lists shows that many of them are in suburban locations outside of the city. A few examples would be STL's "Lone Elk Park" which is in the suburban county and the Boenker Hill Vineyard is in Bridgeton MO. Get a clue.
TripAdvisor snapshot numbers in the raw. No personal extrapolation, no spin to make any one city look better than the other. They fall where they fall. the # after the dash is what TA shows as Things to do. Click on the links and see for yourselves.
This does not take into account or debate the overall snapshot such as hotels or restaurants just shows things to do based off of the current topic. Just speaking for myself Milwaukee surprised me but hey it is what it is. I did not include Louisville since it is a southern city. Might be the northern most southern city but it still is a southern city since KY is a southern state.
I was just doing random city comparisons and some cities have regular shopping malls listed as tourist attractions and others don't. Some cities that have good PR list all tours for their cities while others won't. You can have over lapping tours as well.
I don't know about Portland but Miami doesn't really have many attractions. When people ask me what they should see when they come here, I tell them hit the beach, stroll the Art Deco district and then book tours based on their interests (Everglades? Fishing? Scuba Diving?).
I mean, there are some museums, zoo's, some restaurants/lounges have great views, and some resorts themselves can be attractions (just for their pools etc) but it's not like other cities where there are recognized landmarks that everyone wants a photograph of. We have no Eiffel tower, hollywood sign, Statue of Liberty etc that are almost like a pilgrimage for tourists.
But then I have to question what exactly Portland has. Maybe because it's such a newly sprouted hipster city, they made attractions out of a bunch of nonsense.
Either way, our tourism numbers speak for themselves. Despite having less attractions on Trip Advisor, we attract way way way more tourists than Portland, and really any other US city but NYC and LA. Sometimes quality is better than quantity.
Omaha is in the Midwest and is listed as having 116 "things to do" on TripAdvisor.. Based on the original list, that puts Omaha in the top 12 (along with Kansas City)..

When I look at cities and "Things to Do," I first look at LA. It has the Museums, Food Locations (In-N-Out/Roscoes), Nightlife, Outdoor Activities (Runyon Canyon), Shopping, Parks, Walkable Areas, Iconic Landmarks, etc. Miami checks out on most of these, with the Iconic Landmark being the Hotels on Ocean Drive.
So in this case, when it applies to Midwestern cities. Chicago edges out the rest at #1, especially with the Food Locations (Harold's, Deep Dish Pizza), and the Iconic Landmarks (The Bean). After Chicago, it becomes difficult imo; because to Trip Advisor Milwaukee has more things to do than Kansas City or Detroit...two cities that fit more of the listed qualities above than Milwaukee itself.

For me, NYC is a much more fun city for tourism than LA. In fact, a lot of tourists to LA are routinely disappointed. In California, I think San Francisco is the best city for tourists.

We need a way to eliminate "attractions" that are not really attractions. I'm sure for Milwaukee because they have no big name attractions, a lot of things made the list that the average tourist won't even bother doing despite it being on trip advisor. An attraction needs a certain cache, a certain amount of interest, for us to consider it.
What killed this for me is when they said Saint Louis has more Nightlife then Atlanta and Miami. I know that's a lie from the pit of hell! Don't get me wrong the Lou is a fun town but please....
