Aurora has been Colorado's punching bag for decades, but pound-for-pound it's actually safer than Denver proper. No surprise that Pueblo is the true danger zone. It's grit-tastic.

I have friends who live in Aurora and it looks like a pretty middle class area. Not the nicest city but definitely doesn't look dangerous.
No surprise about Tennessee. I lived in Memphis for five years. My house was burglarized five times, my car was broken into twice, and then it was stolen from right out of my driveway. And I was in a "safe" neighborhood. The thing with Memphis is, even its safe neighborhoods are just a block or two away from crack neighborhoods. And it's a shame, too, because otherwise it's a beautiful city.
I don't buy into violent crime rates. Wichita, KS more violent than Baltimore? Springfield, MA more violent than Philadelphia? I don't buy it. If I was to drop you off somewhere in Baltimore, North Philly, Camden, Chester or Wilmington at night vs Upper Hill in Springfield Massachusetts which would you choose?
I know Springfield, MA fairly well and there is nothing scary about it. Even the east side/Upper Hill area is not scary. What I think it is in Springfield and Wichita is 1) white trash calling police and pressing charges if someone shoves them and 2) police take more calls seriously and people report more on average. It could also be the way these cities classify crimes, if they manipulate them (murders up 50% but violent crime is down 12% see we're doing our job!).

You don't buy into crime rates, but only when it fits your stereotype? That makes no sense.
Anyhow, you need a Camden update. Crime rate has dropped considerably. Only 8 murders in Camden as of 6/6/17.

That's still more homicides than Springfield has so far this year and Springfield is much larger. Camden even had as many homicides as Boston did last year.
And it could just be a quiet start to the year. Camden had 25 homicides in 2001, 49 in 2004, 34 in 2009, 67 in 2012, 44 last year, etc. It's by no means a trend based on 5 months of data. Camden has traditionally fluctuated. Camden will still probably finish the year with more homicides than Springfield has had any year this century.
It isn't called variation. Just because Philadelphia varies from really dangerous hoods to tons of really safe areas means the entire philly area is safer than Springfield. Same with Baltimore. The city proper might be crime filled but the area 70% of the metro lives is mostly nice suburban neighborhoods.
