Chicago and San Francisco, with LA a step behind, perhaps on both criteria.

Of course, that German belt is one of the four barbecue capitals of America.

I'm partial to the one I was born and raised in. But I will confess that I haven't yet been to a really good Texas Q joint; the one Texas-style place that opened in Philadelphia was mediocre and closed after about three years.

Edited to add: There is now, however, a Q place in Dallas called "18th and Vine." We have landed on the Texas shores.
Some of the small towns around Austin have some awesome BBQ. Luling particularly. Aaron Franklin has appeared on all the late night shows and his place in downtown Austin is renowned to be the best. People wait for over 4 hours to get some. Never tried it as I will not wait 4 hours for food.

NB is actually south of Austin. The area between Austin and Dallas, imo, is pretty unimpressive in all categories.

Yea, Texas style bbq outside of Texas generally isn't very good.

This list has Portland (OR) higher than Charleston and any other city on this poll. By the way, Portland Maine is not one of the poll options.

"Which cities rival NYC as the best 2nd city in America, and which rivals 2nd for food? (size, live)"

We all make typos; it's ok: we're human. But making one on the title of your thread seems to me to be too big and unforgivable a mistake and so, yes, we should hold you accountable.

Logically what you mean to write was:

"Which cities rival Chicago as the best 2nd city in America, and which rivals 2nd for food? (size, live)"

Of course, this makes for a very short thread since any Chicagoan can (and would) tell you, "there is no city second to Chicago"
