To me, Pittsburgh's downtown is far more interesting, and a testament to the wealth and power that once resided there.
Charlottesville, VA or Athens, GA?
That's a good matchup. Charlottesville has better cultural amenities while Athens has superior dining and nightlife. The pedestrian mall edges it in favor Charlottesville for me.
Owensboro, I like what they've done with the riverfront.
Kent OH or Eau Claire WI
Never been to either, but looking at pictures/info, I'll have to go with Kent on this one. Eau Claire just has a typical "Main Street" type downtown with several blocks of businesses, and then go just a couple blocks away, it's much quieter. At least Kent as a university fronting it, a legitimate downtown not too far (Akron) and a REAL one (Cleveland) not too much further from that. Kent's has many more eateries, is upstream of a river that's a national park, and of course isn't nearly as isolated.
