It's by percentage, and only private companies. Interesting but limited. Basically it's start-ups.

The real booming economies tend to be where the public companies and larger companies are also growing. Also you could arguably put local payroll, profits, and/or market value above sales revenues. Further, a 5,000% growing company that's also pretty large might be worth 100x a bunch of small firms growing by 500% annually, so a graduated ranking would be interesting.

I appreciate the compilation in any case. You do a lot of good work.

Did you calculate these? If so, there's lots of opportunity for error. For one, I question how Indiana has 63 but Indy only has 38 of these. Outside Ft Wayne, the other large metros in IN are suburbs of Louisville and Chicago. Were those areas included with Louisville and Chicago?

The site has a nice interactive filter which easily tells you totals. Go to the bottom of the page and view the full list and this filter will come up if you are not on a mobile phone. You can pick Indiana from the state filter.

Yes. Fastest growing implies by percentage. I wouldn't say all are startups. Certainly ones in larger metros might have a bunch, but there are many seemingly random companies on here from real estate companies and real estate appraisal companies to home goods to even random environmental science companies in Montana.

Agree. That's why i put the change in amount for these locations compared to last year's ranking. Not necessarily graduated, but gives a small sense in the recent times. Going back a few more years would be better though.

First, I'd like to thank the OP for doing the heavy lifting needed to compile this INC.5000 MSA ranking.

Next, I took note of just how well Baltimore placed in the ranking. Baltimore has been so frequently dissed either for its crime, discredited as a mere shadow city to Washington or dismissed because of its lack of F500 companies that its core economic vitality may be missed. Its ranking here suggests a radically revised evaluation.

Additionally, I'd like express how pleased I was to see Cincinnati's ranking, especially in relation to its peer cities. Later on, I'm sharing such positive business news on City-Data's Cincinnati forum.

Lastly, my eyes popped out upon seeing the stats for both Salt Lake City and Provo, UT. The connection between these two metros, if there is one, is unknown to me, but no matter - they are both standouts.

Baltimore certainly holds it's own place, however it's proximity to the Washington MSA is big plus. Having the 2nd ranked city on this list in the adjacent counties to your south does cause some spillover.

This is good to see the INC 5000 show well for Baltimore, but as an example when talking the 15 Fortune 500 companies in the DC-Baltimore area, 0 of them are in the Baltimore MSA. That's not acceptable for a population of 3 million people. Now on this list it ranks about where it's population should, but the lack of any Fortune 500's says it has a bit to go. Baltimore's economy can exist without DC sure, but I believe it's more robust with DC's close presence. Long term I expect the two economies to show much greater connection as well.

Thanks for sharing this; I wanted to elaborate upon such perceptions in my post, but hesitated because of length. More than not, in my opinion, Baltimore is portrayed as some sort of lesser relative of Washington, which it isn't. So much happens in Baltimore on its own that escapes notice, but I think its status as a "stand alone MSA" will undoubtedly remain an open ended question.
