I'd narrow it down to Chicago, Philadelphia, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Chicago and Philly hit all of the marks except maybe the extensive outdoor activities........ Charlotte hits all of the marks except "get-rid-of-your-car" level of transit. It has light rail, trollies, and a good bus system, but not to the degree of CHI, PHIL, or ATL. But if you live along one of the light rail lines, you could go without a car. I know a few who have done so and they're happy (I live in the Charlotte area, PM if you want any specific info). Charlotte has a huge financial/banking sector. Tons of outdoor stuff....... I know you didn't mention Atlanta, but they might come closest to the average sum of what you're looking for. But all 4 are great areas. Just have to figure to what degree each offers what you want. No matter where you land, good luck!
Denver, near downtown. It has an increasing demographic in your age bracket, all major pro sports, running, hiking, live music (Red Rocks is one of the most unique venues in the country), indoor rock climbing, certified scuba divers and diving excursions (surprisingly, the highest percent per-capita of any state), and plenty of food & drink outlets. A couple hours away is skiing, outdoor climbing, hiking, camping, and more outdoor activity than you can dream up.
1. Less costly than NYC, Chicago, or DC area. However, it is getting increasingly expensive for an inland city.
2. Jobs, plenty of them. Unemployment at record low with many large companies and some Fortune listed companies.
3. Nightlife, not too shabby. Plenty of bars and clubs as well as pro sports complexes.
4. Public transport is decent downtown and improving throughout the metro. There is a direct line running to the airport, which is an international airport. A car will still be necessary if you are going to take advantage of what the entire area offers.
5. 52-54% transplant population enough for you?
6. Denver MSA is over 3 million.
7. Climate is highly variable 4 season. Low humidity makes it infinitely tolerable. Winters are not bad by mid-western or north-eastern standards.
