Here's some Northeast Ohio totals:

Cleveland: 118 (down from 120 in 2018 and the lowest since 2014)

Akron: 33 (down from 37 in 2018)

Youngstown: 20 (down from 28 in both 2018 and 2017 and lowest since 2016 ... still a rate of 35-plus because of the steep population decline, but still way down from the mid-90s when it was in the 60 to 70 per year range)

Canton: 12 (which is what the city has averaged for about the past 40 years ... though like Youngstown has had a big population decline in that timeframe)

I couldn't find totals for Warren and Lorain, the two other Northeast Ohio cities that have had a least 10 a year recently. I'm guessing Lorain may have been double digits again. Don't know about Warren, which usually is in the 5-8 range, but did have 13 two years ago.

I also haven't seen what the numbers were for Cuyahoga County (outside Cleveland), which generally is around 30 to 40 (population roughly 850,000, though).

Washington DC: 56.6%
Detroit: 46.6%
Baltimore: 36.4%

Percentage of People Living in Census Tracts With 3+ Homicides per tract for 2019

Baltimore: 30.52%
Washington DC: 13.48%
Detroit: 9.85%

Los Angeles: 1.53%
Think this actually tells you more about how safe you'll feel in a city than the headline homicide rate. I'd rather walk around downtown Detroit than east of the Anacostia DC, and if I'm anywhere in Baltimore I'm not walking around, I'm running away!

My wife went to John's Hopkins for grad school. When I asked her what she thought the 0 homicide percent was, she thought it was way higher than it was LOL. It's interesting because she's told me that she didnt feel safe in many areas. She lived in a premiere neighborhood but had a few run ins herself while living there including someone climbing her building to her 2nd floor unit and entering into her apartment while everyone was home... I've visited a few times. I like parts to visit but would probably choose to never live there.

These calculations I'm doing is really meant to show how much of the population you could say is affected by having a homicide happen within a few blocks of where they live. Sometime I'll do physical area calculations.

The reality of living in a big city is that these things might not affect you much, or maybe they will. It's all about where you live and work, and hang out. There are tons of people whether it's NYC or Chicago whose reality is different than anothers on another side of town. However, looking at the percentages could be eye opening to someone.

The size of these Census tracts either geographically and proportioned to their city's geography or population wise is extremely different across these cities. Los Angeles and Chicago are the 2nd and third largest cities in the country, none of the others are larger than 20th. Very hard to compare these.

Yes, but it still offers more insight than just talking about an entire city as that does not begin to tell you how concentrated or not these are. The main point of what I'm really doing is trying to show what percentage of people are affected by having at least 1 homicide happen within a calendar year close to where they live. Tracts could be different sizes, but they still usually aren't huge geographically meaning it still tells us how many people a homicide could have indirectly affected. If you live in an area and a homicide happened 2 or 3 blocks from you, chances are you'll be on higher alert even if you don't believe it can truly happen to you.

Could you do Jackson , MS? I'm quite curious on it and to add to those percentage are higher when a few of those tracts experience 1 homicide every other year or years apart.

Do you have a source for Jackson that either has each homicide by lat/long or address it happened at? If so then I can do it.

Flint town, according to this Flint police report, has seen 43 homicides in 2019. With a population of 96k(2018 estimate) that gives a homicide rate of 44.8.
