BTW Jackson, MS is a small city. It has a metro population of 576,382 putting it below Provo-Orem, UT MSA and Melbourne FL MSA in terms of population

Yeah, I think people forget we had -50 winchills.
It was in the teens and lower for weeks at a time. No one is out chillin.

Last year in January/ February we had 60 degree days.

Minus the fact that January in Chicago for 2019 was the lowest in 9 years (https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/01/us/ch...des/index.html) even though 18 of 31 days were temps at or above historical averages (https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/ch...onyr=1/01/2019). In January 2018, the same number of days were at or above historical averages, yet there was literally double the homicides last January versus this January.

Yes, there's less homicides usually committed in cities when it's colder out, but it's not as simple as that. The amount of homicides in Chicago has been decreasing steadily since the last few months of 2017. This isn't some major reduction that all of a sudden happened. It's been in steady decline and isn't because of the weather.

The usual suspects are sadly leading the city pack so far this year.

* St. Louis: 25 | 8.10 per 100K
* Baltimore: 49 | 8.01 per 100K
* New Orleans: 24 | 6.10 per 100K
* Memphis: 31 | 4.75 per 100K
* Washington DC: 32 | 4.61 per 100K
* Kansas City: 22 | 4.50 per 100K
* Detroit: 25 | 3.71 per 100K
* Philadelphia: 57 | 3.61 per 100K
* Oakland: 15 | 3.53 per 100K
* Atlanta: 17 | 3.50 per 100K

Although surprises seem to be an uptick with DC, Kansas City and Atlanta into the unfortunate top 10 so far this year...

I think every year people say it’s the coldest winter ever. That really cold round of weather lasted THREE days before and after which it was above normal. There have been multiple spells of 50s in both January and February this year and the longest we went with highs in the teens and lower (drumroll please).....four days. Not trying to compare that to the crime rate, just pointing out this winter has been very “average†except for the much publicized polor vortex which was three days long followed by temps in the 50s right after.

Yes and I'm one of those people who have lost 2 relatives to personal/domestic violence in 1 year. It's been stated many times that the largest share of those violence stats happens in the same specific areas of any large city. Additionally, it's predominantly individuals that know each that have problems or criminal ties within their network. So even the highest per capita listed cities still aren't that overly " dangerous ".

A small city would be a micropolitan area with a core between 10K to 50K. Yet it's metro position is above 288 other metros, that's sure is small man.
