Thanks as always for compiling these stats. Many of us on here really appreciate this, it takes a lot of time to do.
I’m wondering if Chicago will not be the “murder capital” this year in terms of raw numbers. It looks like Baltimore, Philadelphia or even NYC might be (I know murder RATE is what matters but the media has this fixation on raw numbers). I guess it all depends on what happens this summer.
True - though Miami Beach barely has any homicides any given year. Between 2010 and 2017, the highest amount of homicides in a given year was 8 in 2010. The 2nd highest was 7 in 2016. The other 6 years each had 5 homicides or below.
8 - 7 - 5... That's quite a lot for a 95k city if you ask me
Look like improvement from last year, how many were they by the same time last year? Because if this trend continue, L.A could finish with less than 200 (38 in almost 3 months)

I think anything 5 and under is moderate. Even 7 is still not super high. It might be a city of 95K, but there's way more people there on any given day thanks to tourism and nightlife. Also, one of the years only had 2 homicides. Fort Lauderdale usually has more homicides in a given year than Miami Beach.
Would this have been considered self-defense(non-homicide) if the victim had shot and killed the carjacker?
Yeah I think so...

This is way above normal for Charlotte. This is basically a rerun of 2017, when Charlotte finished at 86 but was on pace for the 140s during the first half of '17...
The pace right now is for ~136, which would be close to the record of 138 or so from the early 90s. I'm sure it'll taper off at some point; Charlotte hasn't had 100 murders since the mid-90s, and for much of '17 it looked like 100 would be easy and it didn't reach 90...
Surprising would be an understatement if Charlotte had more than 105 or so...

It's near the national average for a city close to 100k. It tells me that there is probably one sketchy to bad pocket, but the city looks like it's flourishing with businesses. The highest it had in the last 34 years was 22 murders in 1985. https://www.ucrdatatool.gov/Search/C...risbyJuris.cfm

Well... It is on par with Brockton Ma and Brockton is far from a nice city (5-8 per year). And for the tourist thing, I think it would be nice to know what led to the killings, like were they domestic? Turf war? Drug related or like Florida is famous for "random parking lot alteraction?" The circumstances of those killings will tell more about safety concern

I would say it has more to do with it being one of the party capitals of the world..
