I was born and raised in Mpls but never been to Pittsburgh. From the looks of it through google earth and images on the web the city is beautiful and quite compact. How does it compare to Mpls? Which is the better city in your opinion? (Specifically for adults age 24 to 30)
Consider the following:
-Economy
-Culture
-Nightlife (Diversity in nightlife for people of different ethnicities)
-Emenities
-Diversity
-Built form
-Public transportation
-Education
-Location
-Vibe
-QOL/COL
-Weather
This has definitely been done before, but it is a good match up.
-Economy: Minneapolis. I recently read that Minneapolis is currently having a net loss of jobs, whereas Pittsburgh proper is having job growth. So, the gap may be closing.
-Culture: Pittsburgh. Both have interesting local cultures, but I give it to the 'burgh for that quintessential Yinzer
-Nightlife (Diversity in nightlife for people of different ethnicities): I think Minneapolis. Pittsburgh is not all too diverse.
-Emenities: Amenities. Probably Minneapolis, as the metro is over 1M people larger.
-Diversity: Minneapolis
-Built form: Pittsburgh
-Public transportation: About a tie? I haven't actually taken either, so someone else's input would be useful here.
-Education: I think Minneapolis K-12 schools might be better than Pittsburgh. For higher ed, Pittsburgh. UPitt and Carnegie are fantastic.
-Location: Pittsburgh easily for proximity to other cities, topography, etc.
-Vibe: Pittsburgh (v subjective)
-QOL/COL: Pittsburgh
-Weather: Pittsburgh
I personally prefer Pittsburgh. It has fantastic history, built form, topography, outdoor recreation, and is within 5-6 hours of many U.S. cities. Yes, the metro is still losing population due to the aging baby boomers. The city proper is still revitalizing and adding jobs. It is a pretty good match up, though.
-Economy: I'd assume Minneapolis
-Culture: Not sure since this is a loaded term. I prefer the demographics and lifestyle of Minneapolis
-Nightlife (Diversity in nightlife for people of different ethnicities): Minneapolis since you included ethnicities. I'd assume in the general sense this is pretty much a wash
-Amenities: Probably Minneapolis
-Diversity: Minneapolis
-Built form: Pittsburgh is pretty unique in its built form so I'll give it to the Burgh
-Public transportation: I have no idea. I heard the Twin Cities have a decent public transit system but I haven't studied on Pittsburgh
-Education: If we are considering the whole education spectrum then Minneapolis. Pittsburgh has the better universities
-Location: Pittsburgh is closer to a variety of mid-sized and big cities so it's unanimous for me. MPLS is too isolated for me.
-Vibe: I don't know
-QOL/COL: Well MPLS/SP is definitely pricier but offers a very high QOL. I'd go MPLS on this one
-Weather: It's a wash for me
I just think the Twin Cities is just larger and a very complete package. Though I would really like to visit Pittsburgh and get a sense of the vibe there but I have doubts it could top MPLS afterwards.
I like both areas a lot. Would recommend either. MSP has a better economy. PIT has a better COL. I'll go with PIT due to its close proximity to the Atlantic.
-Economy: Minneapolis
-Culture: Pittsburgh
-Nightlife: tie. neither city is great
-Amenities: Minneapolis (Airport and NBA basketball give ur the edge)
-Diversity: MPLS, but people underplay how much of that “diversity” is Hmong and Somali
-Built form: Pittsburgh
-Public transportation: Pittsburgh
-Education: K-12, Minneapolis. Higher Ed, PGH
-Location: Pittsburgh
-Vibe: Pittsburgh
-QOL/COL: Pittsburgh
-Weather: Pittsburgh
Minneapolis offers more, but it’s FREEZING, silghtly overrated and overpriced. There’s no reason to choose Minneapolis over Chicago.
I see a couple and the were started at different times, one going back years...
Atlanta, Austin and Minneapolis are all currently running on this page.
And of course Pittsburgh always wins the poll. Because this is the Real World, right?
That's what i refereed to, those threads were all started at different times.
You second comment about winning sounds more like an issue you have with it.
This is a forum, not the real world of course, so not sure what the issue is. Again, one of the threads was started years ago.
I really don't have an issue with it; I simply find it amusing.
If I want to hear the virtues of Pittsburgh invoked ad nauseum, this will always be my go-to place.
