Tampa, Denver, Baltimore, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, San Antonio, Cincinnati, Austin, Indianapolis etc.. would be the best cities that come to mind as being peers
How it stacks up next to them depends on what metrics you want to use

Denver isn't an economic giant the people think it is lol. It sits right above Baltimore in Urban, Metro populations as well as GDP.
Nationally, Denver is #18 and Baltimore is #19 in all 3 metrics. Their populations are split ~100k and both now have GDP's north of $200billion. For context Charlottes GDP is currently ranked #20 (GDP was ~$174billion in 2017)

Denver's tier group is Phoenix, San Diego, and Minneapolis. Charlotte is catching up but it's not there yet. Baltimore could make a case for being in that group though.
Regarding Charlotte I think we both agree it's at the high-end of its respective tier and will soon be moving into the above mentioned tier group.
Everyone who I know who lives or has visited says they love it, so I'm long over due for a trip to see for myself!
It's a very nice place in a great location, I've always liked Charlotte. They're doing a lot of things right, and the growth and changes in Uptown are just astounding.

Unlike Nashville, Charlotte has a clean slate for development in the core. Nashville has several old boarded up warehouses, run down areas, and small bungalow homes that must be torn down to make the area more useful.

Charlotte used to have all of those issues as well. They dealt with them years ago, while maintaining the character of the cool residential old 4th Ward immediately adjacent to the core.
Nashville, Columbus, Austin, Indianapolis, Louisville (historically, although Charlotte is pretty decidedly ahead now); perhaps Denver & Pittsburgh into the future.
