I would pick Scottsdale unless you want to date college girls at UT. Scottsdale is 14% cheaper overall according to my favorite cost of living site. I prefer the climate and scenery of Scottsdale although Zilker Park in Austin is pretty special.

It all depends on what kind of neighborhood the OP is looking for. Our son just moved away from Austin after four years (just got his PhD ). He and his wife lived in a suburban neighborhood that was quite similar in character to what you would find in Scottsdale or other parts of the valley. (There was even a Roaring Fork about a 10 minute walk away.) You hear a lot about Austin being weird/cool/hip but I think you have to be closer to the campus or downtown. If one is looking for urban, Austin has Scottsdale beat, if it's more suburban you seek, Scottsdale would probably be better.

Congrats on your son's Phd...yeah I like Austin a lot but I just like Scottsdale more. I have good friends that moved from Scottsdale to Austin and they like Austin more though they miss some things in Arizona.
