Saw a Birmingham vs. Greensboro thread on C-D but not this one specifically with the Triad's "second" city. Which of these two underrated Southern towns do you prefer and why? Things to consider: culture, history, economy, future outlook, urban potential, etc. and whatever else you want.

I do agree with you that Birmingham is underrated. I think it unfairly carries the baggage and stereotypes of pre-1970's images.

But I do prefer Winston Salem. I like that it's in the Greensboro/Winston Salem metro (very underrated itself). WS is just about an hour from Charlotte. Very beautiful foothills to the west and northwest. Wonderful 4-season climate. Has a very interesting Quaker history. Though the area's economy isn't at the level of Charlotte's or Atlanta's, it's still solid.

You mean Moravians. Moravians aren't Quakers.

Anyway, Winston-Salem is a fantastic and very livable city. Being home to one of the country's top universities, Wake Forest, definitely helps. Its Old Salem area, along with Salem College (a Moravian school) is absolutely charming. The city is affordable, beautiful, and is easy to navigate. It has a lively downtown, excellent medical facilities (see Wake Forest), good schools, and it isn't burdened with an embarrassing past that Birmingham has.

Winston-Salem's location in the middle of one of the country's most prosperous states helps and gives it a much brighter future, in my opinion, than Birmingham which is saddled with a state that seems to be rooting for its demise.

Winston-Salem is better. It is located in a more prosperous and nicer state. Birmingham is run down and crime ridden in several areas.

True, as do most all cities in the Southeast.

never been to winston-salem, so i'll refrain from comparisons.

however, i'm not sure there's a more maligned city on this site than birmingham. just know that if you haven't been to birmingham in the past 10 years... you haven't been to birmingham.

I think the majority just don't know. Many just go off what they read online. I never can understand how a person can comment on a place that you haven't spent a good amount of time in. Then it's a few posters who downright hate birmingham for whatever reason.

But when you have these city vs city thread, it's all baised opinions from everyone and shouldn't be taken serious, regardless..
