Chicago is actually my favorite city but from my observation it seems as though the Chicago forumers are overtly hating on the CSA designation because it obviously boosts other regions to better compete with Chicago.. this is City-Data so discussion on all metrics would only be obvious.
Example - forumer above.
Why in the world would you call it hate? I merely gave my opinion from reading soooooo much rhetoric on it on C-D. Like I said. Only two regions hype it for the reason I stated.
Chicago does not hype it to make the region a near mega-city one. Noted that. It is SECURE in its status. Plenty of issues ..... but not about that.
As someone with no ties to either Chicago or DC, I thought I would mention that I don't like CSAs myself. I think they are far too broad.
I grew up in Talladega, which is in the Birmingham CSA, but it was completely a small town life, and Birmingham had no bearing on any part of our lives. The TV showed traffic there, and that was annoying, because it didn't affect us.
When we went shopping, it was usually in the Anniston-Oxford area. We went to Atlanta as much as Birmingham.
With internet television and shopping along with satellite radio, a lot of whatever impact the CSA cores had on their hinterlands is fading.
That being said, it might be interesting to note that Orlando's CSA is the 15th largest in the US and larger than a few cities that have been listed as being in a higher tier here.
Charlotte, Austin, San Antonio & Orlando. I think Charlotte & Austin will be the best on that list. Vegas & Portland will be nice as well. I think San Antonio & Orlando will be large on the scale of Charlotte & Austin, but they seem to be lacking in something in identity that makes them a "big city". Charlotte is effectively the capital of the Carolinas and Austin is the cool kid on the block of Texas. I think that San Antonio being so close actually hurts its reputation because people would probably rather associate themselves with Austin rather than San Antonio.
