1. Economy: Des Moines
2. Downtown: Des Moines
3. Overall amenities: Des Moines

Des Moines is a capital city, a larger city and is more vibrant.

Lexington is nice, but feels a lot smaller and quieter. It is growing well though.

Des Moines based on this criteria for sure.

I lived in Des Moines for a year. It's a very vibrant city with a lot more happening than Lexington. Lexington does very well for its size level though.

Des Moines for all three categories, but that's not to take anything from Lexington. It's just a decent bit smaller and it does pretty well for its size IMO.

It's not a very apples to apples to comparison. Lexington is primarily a college town. Des Moines is the largest metro area in it's state and doesn't house a large public college.

Des Moines wins on all categories, but it's almost like comparing Des Moines to Minneapolis or Kansas City.
