Boston’s Mayor had his State of the City address tonight. He announced a plan to spend half a billion dollars ($500 million) over the next 5 years to build affordable housing-a fivefold increase over current levels- and to start a city funded rental voucher program to help low income folks pay their rent. Stuff like that certainly helps retain many Black residents.
I saw this online. But in all honesty, how the hell is he going to do that? Theres 25,000 units of projects that got scrapped or downsized from NIMBYs in the past 2 years. Thats over 3,000 affordable units? Is he going to spontaneously make the NIMMBYs disappear?
As far as what I have seen for blacks, yes.NYC blacks have been leaving NYC in droves due to cost. I dont know what makes Boston different but it seems to be true.
From what I know of New Yorkers when I lived in Atlanta and what I've research it's a couple of factors that play into why so many Black people are leaving New York in comparison to Boston.
1. New Yorkers period are leaving NYC in general. Cost of living, declining economy and being too crowded are enough reasons alone to make anybody leave the city.
2. Majority of Boston's rise in black population comes from Foreign-born Blacks. Most immigrants tend to migrate to areas with already established immigrant communities. It also helps that Boston while being expensive is less crowded and easier to navigate in and out in comparison to NYC.
3.I also tend to believe that Boston being the premier city in New England has it's benefits for other Blacks in neighboring states. I know my ex spoke of this when she first moved to Boston from Hartford. She liked NYC more but felt Boston was a smoother transition. She said a lot of black ppl from CT were doing the same moving into Greater Boston.
4.A lot of Black people from the West coast/midwest/NYC have roots down south so it's an easier transition for them to move down here. That's why you see so many Black Californian's in Texas and so many Black New Yorkers in GA/Carolinas/FLA. It's like hey I can get a bigger house, a good paying job and be closer to family I haven't seen in years. People no matter the ethnicity tend to be tribal.

all of these points are correct i just agree with 2 and 3 the most.
2. I'd say 80-% of Boston areas black growth is foreign born blacks (and they're american born children). The rest is split between American born wets indians and black americans. It's generally much less crowded than very similar neighborhoods in NYC. With more greenery and larger apartments. Policing and law enforcement is also more far more lax and that can feel nice. We Don't have robocops posted up at the turnstiles, or watch towers in our neighborhoods. We don't have cops shooting and choking black people in the streets.

Yea those fit..ultimately the point is many main drags and commercial throughfares in Hartfords black areas are underdeveloped and ugly compared to Boston's and NYC is crowded and dirty.
I'm not trying to take away from anyone's efforts to prove their city is better than another but most cities with a sizable Black community have nice areas where Blacks live.
This goes to show us that even with our country's nasty racist history and with the present issues we have to still face, there are many great options for Blacks to grow and thrive. NYC, Boston or Miami there is something there if one is willing to go and get it.
My issue with these lists is just because Charlotte and Atlanta are growing their Black middle class due to immigration from New York and California doesn't mean that the same Blacks couldn't move to St. Louis or Rochester and thrive as well. Opportunity has to meet location but for the most part, any city is great if that is where one wants to live.
