I was just reading that the average home price in the U.S. right now is $287,000. A while back this sort of thread was going around here on C-D. Just wondering how much has changed since then. How much house can you get in your metro area and/or city for the national average of around $280k-$300k?

Wow those are nice. I truly wish we had homes like that in this price change for middle class families.
The only house in Oakland that is $300,000 or under is this 690 sq ft 1bd cottage, located in one of the most high crime neighborhoods on the West Coast, priced to sell at $299,000
The 2nd cheapest house in Oakland is about 5 blocks away, 3bd/1bth, 798 sq ft; $358,000
Here in Austin and even its outer suburbs, it DEFINITELY won't get you 5 bedrooms or anything close to 2.5k + Sq Ft.
I purchased right at $300k in Leander which is a suburb northwest of Austin by about 25 - 30 miles from the core.
That got me a 3 Br + 1 Office & 2 Ba @ 1,800 Sq Ft
You might get lucky and get 4 Br's but 2.5 - 3k Sq Ft is out of the question at that price range.

my pic
Is Oakland really that bad? I went there about 3 - 4 years ago and it didn't seem terrible. It reminded me a bit of Tacoma WA.

I'm in your neck of the woods. My girlfriend and I are closing on a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath 2 car garage (2,500 sq/ft) townhouse in Pineville for $307,000. We're about 5 mins from I-485 and around 8 minutes from the 485 light rail station. The best part is that our nearest gas station is only 4 minutes away in SOUTH CAROLINA (Yay cheap gas close by!!!!!)
