I was just reading that the average home price in the U.S. right now is $287,000. A while back this sort of thread was going around here on C-D. Just wondering how much has changed since then. How much house can you get in your metro area and/or city for the national average of around $280k-$300k?

Where I live:

Charlotte - https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1.../6146719_zpid/
$294k, 2753 sqft, 5br/3ba

Gastonia (western suburb)-
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2...45647498_zpid/
$297k, 3,000 sqft, 5br/3ba

Concord (northeastern suburb)-
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1.../5671127_zpid/
$299k, 2,600sqft, 5br/3ba

Concord, middle class suburb about 45 min train ride away from DT San Francisco.

https://www.redfin.com/CA/Concord/40...7/home/1797345
$299K, 898 sq ft, 2br/1ba
https://www.redfin.com/CA/Concord/30...0/home/1300272
$295K, 700 sq ft, 1br/1ba

As ridiculous as these look a lot of the Bay Area is worse.

Wow those are nice. I truly wish we had homes like that in this price change for middle class families.

The only house in Oakland that is $300,000 or under is this 690 sq ft 1bd cottage, located in one of the most high crime neighborhoods on the West Coast, priced to sell at $299,000

The 2nd cheapest house in Oakland is about 5 blocks away, 3bd/1bth, 798 sq ft; $358,000

Here in Austin and even its outer suburbs, it DEFINITELY won't get you 5 bedrooms or anything close to 2.5k + Sq Ft.

I purchased right at $300k in Leander which is a suburb northwest of Austin by about 25 - 30 miles from the core.

That got me a 3 Br + 1 Office & 2 Ba @ 1,800 Sq Ft

You might get lucky and get 4 Br's but 2.5 - 3k Sq Ft is out of the question at that price range.

Is Oakland really that bad? I went there about 3 - 4 years ago and it didn't seem terrible. It reminded me a bit of Tacoma WA.

Very, very little in my town. I would say nothing, but if you get lucky, you might score a tiny one-bedroom condo like this:

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2...25681800_zpid/

$285k, 1 bedroom/1 bath, 693 sq ft.

It's actually in a very nice, safe, walkable location surrounded by all kinds of amenities. You could do worse!

I'm in your neck of the woods. My girlfriend and I are closing on a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath 2 car garage (2,500 sq/ft) townhouse in Pineville for $307,000. We're about 5 mins from I-485 and around 8 minutes from the 485 light rail station. The best part is that our nearest gas station is only 4 minutes away in SOUTH CAROLINA (Yay cheap gas close by!!!!!)
