No way GR beats Bham for scenery. Sure Lake Michigan is nice, but you can only enjoy it for a short part of the year. Bham is a short drive from Mt Cheaha, Oak Mountain, Lake Guntersville, and even the Smokies for a long weekend, in any season!

You absolutely can enjoy it anytime of year. People come to look at the ice in the winter, the powerful fall storms and obviously swim and fish in the summer.

Scenery can be subjective to many but Grand Rapids doesn't lack access to this. By no means do I think Birmingham lacks access to this either, but you are severely discounting Lake Michigan.

I'd give Birmingham the edge over Grand Rapids in sports.

UAB & Samford basketball/football, USL Championship soccer, AA minor league baseball, SEC baseball tournament, Birmingham Bowl college football bowl, Nascar, Senior PGA golf.

Economy: Grand Rapids
Climate : Birmingham
Crime: Grand Rapids
Education: Birmingham
Food/Cuisine: Tie
Housing: Unsure
Transportation: Grand Rapids
Livability: Tie
Culture: Tie
Location: Birmingham
Shopping: Tie
Sports: Birmingham
Things to Do: Depends on what you like, tie
Scenery: Birmingham for the hills, Grand Rapids for the shoreline. Tie
Outdoor Activities: Grand Rapids
Sports: Birmingham, though Grand Rapids minor league scene is no slouch.

These cities are fairly even I think. Birmingham is still bigger, and feels bigger, though Grand Rapids has been catching up quickly.

I’ve been to Birmingham on numerous occasions. I like it for a southern city well enough.
