Are you sure about Buffalo's percentage drop? Seems extreme even for Buffalo.

Random question. Can boundaries of urban areas expand each year within the confines of a metro? Based on population growth or shifting.

Yes, but the census tract has to reach a minimum population + density before it can be incorporated into the UA

Urban Area =/= Metro.

Metro counts the entire county via traffic patterns. Urban Area is calculated by counting connecting census tracts that meet minimum population + density requirnments. Everything from Palm Beach to Miami proper is through and through developed with zero breaks in-between because they have to squish all development between the Atlantic and the Everglades

Outside of LA and SF-Oakland, Miami is probably the most consistently developed metro in the country

Then why is SF/Oaks urban area so small. It’s like 50% of the MSA. Boston UA is 90% of its MSA. This is a genuine question as I feel Most of the Bsoton MSA isn’t urban at all..it can be quite rural and orlverall is low density. I don’t get it. I’d imagine SF/OAK to be a larger urbanized area than BOS or ATL
