A man was gunned down last night in downtown St Louis 2 hours before midnight 194 Same as in 2019. Also 2 homicides in the last few days in which the victims is not shot but died by unknown circumstances
Los Angeles ends the year in a mass shooting that left multiple people shot outside of a supermarket on the Southside of the city.
The chaotic incident left a total of six people hurt. Among the six total, two are in critical condition, two others are seriously hurt and the fifth and sixth patient turned down transport, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The shooting is under investigation.
As of Friday evening, no arrests have been announced.
Minor quibble: Montreal's rate is actually about 1.75 per 100,000.
Based on the population of the area patrolled by the city police, which is the whole island of Montreal including the city proper and some other municipalities. The island has 2.1 million people.
In order to get the 2.07 per 100,000 rate you need to use only the city proper population (1.78 million) but that's not accurate because 37 is for the entire island, as patrolled by city police.
Here are some numbers I've found for Northeast Ohio cities. Overall, it was another bad year, but some signs that things may be calming down as I believe there were more homicides in the first six months total than the final six months (usually the second half numbers come in significantly higher than the first half due to weather).
East Cleveland - 14 (101.51 per 100k) ... This is down from 2020's 19 (137.76 per 100k); and 10 of the 14 happened before June.
Youngstown - 27 (44.95 per 100k) ... This was as of mid December.
Cleveland - 167 (44.82 per 100k) ... The first news report has 165, but there were two yesterday. This will likely change a bit but will be down from the 179 to 190 (differing reports) from last year. Cleveland was on pace to surpass last year's total for most of the year, but the last couple months saw a big slow down. The city was at 84 by June (was at 70 in June in 2020 when it finished with 179-190). I can't remember that last time homicides were even close between first and second half of the year in Cleveland, usually there is a huge uptick.
Warrensville Heights (SE Cleveland suburb) - 5 (36.26 per 100k) ... This may be the outlier as I believe all if not 4 of the 5 came after June.
Garfield Heights (SE Cleveland suburb) - 9 (30.22 per 100k) ... Seems like they were spread out across the year, and a higher number than normal.
Canton - 18?? (25.40 per 100k) - The local paper usually does an update. There was one last night as well. This could be closer to 20, which would be an all-time record for the city (usually always falls between 12-15).
Maple Heights (SE Cleveland suburb) - 6 (25.32 per 100k) ... Five of the six happened before June. At one point, it looked like Maple would end with a higher rate than Cleveland.
Akron - 42 (22.05 per 100K) ... It looked like it would blow past the 50 in 2021, but only had 1 in the last three months of the year, which was in early October.
Lorain - 12?? (18.40 per 100k) ... Lorain passed its 2021 total of 9 by hitting 10 by the end of May. I believe there were at least two more why I'm listing 12, though, that could go up.
Euclid (NE Cleveland suburb) - 5 (10.06 per 100k) ... I'm pretty sure Euclid was in double figures in 2021, so that's a decrease.
Parma (SW Cleveland suburb) - 6 (7.39 per 100k) ... Ending with 6 isn't that much higher than some other years, but 5 of the six were all in the first two months of the year.
Overall, the region (roughly 4 million) was probably around the same as last year (probably 350-360 or so for a rate around 9 per 100k). The biggest difference was the slight decreases in Cleveland and Akron were offset by an increase from 48 in the Cuyahoga suburbs in 2020 to 71 this year. However, the Cuyahoga suburbs had matched their 2020 totals by June with 48. So, the second half was a lot better there with 23 from June-December (which is about average for that period).
Even with the 71 suburban homicides, the overall suburban rate in Cuyahoga was less than 8 per 100k (population about 982,000). Cuyahoga County in total finished with a rate of around 18.82 (236 with a population of 1.264 million) ... so about on par with Franklin County/Columbus per capita.
