^I think that is what’s nice about areas in the Northeast as you can generally get to a range of amenities within a short distance. With the Westcott area, you can walk, bike, take a bus or take a very short drive to this area for work or events: https://university-hill.com/
https://university-hill.com/fueling-...opportunities/

https://goo.gl/maps/Dei82vMN4uaqKM9p7
https://goo.gl/maps/oPqSMAHDsKtp8HES7

Or go Downtown for the same using this line: https://connectivecorridor.syr.edu/

You could go to a couple of parks in the neighborhood: http://www.syrgov.net/Parks/thorndenPark.html
http://www.syrgov.net/Parks/barryPark.html

For a beach, these 2 would be pretty close options: https://parks.ny.gov/parks/172/details.aspx (plus trails and other amenities)
https://goo.gl/maps/mULfkajJH3LEiCmr8

https://www.onondagacountyparks.com/...le-beach-park/
https://goo.gl/maps/siTFm9dNtk1G8haj6

Say you want culturally relevant arts options, these places are nearby: https://communityfolkartcenter.org/

https://dancetheaterofsyracuse.com/
https://dancetheaterofsyracuse.com/our-board

Also, this is across the street: https://www.syracusestage.org/2122Season.php
https://goo.gl/maps/3Gzk32vTm2gn33wW6

Say you have a child that is athletically inclined, here are nearby Pop Warner and Little League options: https://www.facebook.com/pages/categ...6456180195967/

https://www.syracuse.com/sports/2018...tos_video.html
https://goo.gl/maps/y2K5wpLCmPZq5Xvu6

For shopping, Destiny USA is within city limits and is the 8th biggest shopping center in the country:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=aHfFvI37AIQ&feature=share

https://goo.gl/maps/nsZdcsboUB6CeAyS9

Or you can go to Erie Boulevard East/East Genesee Street for things like Barnes & Noble, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Chico’s, etc. Erie Boulevard East: https://goo.gl/maps/SGK7HuXNRsGBei4t8
https://goo.gl/maps/zNHKa3UpgGTgCsUCA

https://goo.gl/maps/XWVB4bimoXy221AC8

For schools, some may go with zone options(Ed Smith & Nottingham), but some may go with magnet ITC and charter Syracuse Academy of Science for public(last 2 are predominantly black, but diverse and high performing) or private options like Bishop Grimes, Christian Brothers Academy or Manlius Pebble Hill, among others. Grimes has been known for its Basketball program and CBA is known for its Football program(this young man is “up next” in terms of the next D1 talent from that school that has sent players to Pitt, Indiana, Syracuse and Boston College, among others within the past 15 years: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.si....now-2024-class (his brother actually went to Syr. Academy of Science before going prep and now plays Basketball at Syracuse after transferring from Marquette)

Also, more on that Syracuse neighborhood: https://westcottsyr.com/

https://westcottsyr.com/business/las-delicias/

https://westcottstreetfair.org/

https://westcottcc.org/

Business district street view: https://goo.gl/maps/rWUf9SziZZuvyNid8

I forgot that the area is home to the NY State Fair as well: https://nysfair.ny.gov/

So, in many of these Northeastern cities/areas, it just comes down to what you are looking for within each of them.

That Dorchester neighborhood is great because its very much within walking distance of the subway and multiple bus routes.10 minute drive to the beach and 16 minute drive or 22 minutes via public transit to the downtown Boston and 13 minutes drive to the massive South Shore Plaza and adjacent entertainment complex. 18 minute drive to legit hiking trails and seasonal asking in Canton/Milton

All of this in the backdrop of intense ethnic diversity, history, dynamism.... and if you can snag a suburban school slot, get your kid into an exam school or get into one of the dozens of private schools. Youre living a comfortable life. The problem is it requires you to make 120k as a couple if you want to own. Or 85k if you want to rent and not feel totally broke.

Youll see South Shore Plaza located near Milton and Quincy in Braintree Ma is a very large, modern, thriving mall with an extremely diverse clientele. It draws folks from southern Boston as well as the 'Metro South' Suburbs like Braintree Weymouth Stoughton Randolph etc

Would people in the Roslindale/Hyde Park area of the city also go to these places or are there other amenities they are more likely to patronize?

I believe that is it. Again, there will be variation within each and there were some that came close in places like Providence, Worcester, etc.
In terms of the bolded Maine zip code, can anyone offer more insight on this area of Portland?

Yea my brother lived in Portland for about 18monthhs...This is just north of South Portland (which is low income) but basically its downtown gentrified Portland.. and adjacent gentrifying areas

then what amounts to a burgeoning African Immigrant neighborhood that's both poor and gentrifyinga la Southern New England

Oh absolutely. Especially in Hyde Park. It's a very very quick drive from Hyde Park. Its really a guarantee you'll find other HP residents there at all times. Its uber-popular.

This and Downtown Crossing are where I did virtually all of my shopping apart from occasional trips to Legacy Place which literally borders Hyde Park. Lot of people like Legacy Place its a very large very modern shopping and entertainment complex with Kings Bowling, AMC Lux Theatres, Whole Foods, LL Bean,PF Changs and more. Its a whiter clientele but still popular for date nights. Black owned Boston hold pop up markets there.

Both Legacy Place and South Shore Plaza have multiple bus routes. South Shore Plaza is also accessible by rapid transit via the Red Line. Even closer to Hyde Park and Roslindale is the Dedham Mall which was an actual enclosed mall until 2003. used to be very popular with the inner city crowd and that was one of the factors that led to its demise honestly. Now it's more of a large sprawling plaza.

...I'm just saying.

Highest HDI in the entire world, tied with Norway. And the Boston HDI is definitely higher than the Massachusetts statewide HDI.

According to this MA and CT are both above Norway for the highest HDI of any place in the world.

Massachusetts has the top healthcare and education systems in the US, both public and private. The most highly educated population as well.

Great quality of life with all that New England has to offer. 4 true seasons with easy access to beautiful beaches and skiing. Active, educated citizens + top hospitals and doctors also leads to longer life expectancy.

Despite its lack of 'cool' and cultural pull for Black Americans these things matter, a lot, and do pull and hold a substantial black population. It's the price tag you must pay in Boston that's the killer.
