Depend on the city, and to me-the quality of neighborhoods in the city.

This is a good calculator that let’s you adjust for family size, cost of living and other factors: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tan...-middle-class/

So, for the NYC area, a family of 3 at minimum would have to make $60,196 to be in the lowest income for middle class in the area.

Keep in mind that it is using 2018 data. So, that has likely gone up a little bit.

For Philadelphia, it is $51,125.

Boston: $55,394

Providence: $48,457

Harrisburg: $46,857

Hartford: $49,525

Some others in the region…

Pittsburgh: $45,159

Bridgeport: $55,927

New Haven: $52,532

Worcester: $50,107

Springfield: $47,196

Albany: $48,457

Syracuse: $46,808

Rochester: $47,390

Buffalo: $45,984

I’ll stop there, but that pretty much covers the bulk of the region’s major to mid sized metros.

So then I think you’d have to factor in the appearance, and social constructs of a neighborhood you can afford at 60k in NYC. Just my point for the n’hood quality.

Yes, that figure is the bare minimum in terms of reaching the middle class for a 3 person household. This of course gets adjusted up for bigger households.

The average household size is 2.62 according to 2019 5 year census information.

I remember looking at buffalo as a destination to settle after Grad. School because of it's affordability.

And no disrespect to Scranton, but I couldn't see myself living there at all. I don't see it as a desirable place for any black family or person, regardless of socioeconomic status.

*Edit* Not even just Scranton- the farthest NE I'll feel comfortable at is the Lehigh Valley... Maybe even Stroudsburg.

Reminds me of the time when we were driving to Slippery Rock to attend the open house and saw confederate flags... crossed that one off the list immediately and went to Pittsburgh instead. That was my first taste of what I now know is "pennsyltucky"

In terms of the Scranton area, it’s black(and Hispanic) population has grown quite a bit in the past few decades. Besides Scranton, some go to Wilkes-Barre, now Hazleton and are scattered in other suburbs/smaller cities in the area.

Johnstown: $41,861

Lancaster: $47,972

Reading: $46,711

State College: $49,185

York: $46,807

(NY)Binghamton: $46,420

Glens Falls: $47,099

Ithaca: $51,368

Utica-Rome: $45,208

(NJ)Atlantic City: $48,651

Trenton: $52,677

Ocean City: $50,058

(NH)Manchester-Nashua: $52,338

(VT)Burlington: $51,271

The sportscaster on KCMO-TV (now KCTV) when I was growing up was a graduate of (what I believe was then called) Slippery Rock State College, and during basketball season, he would always provide updates on how the Slippery Rock team was doing.

The school belonged, and still belongs, to the small-college athletic association, the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The NAIA remains headquartered in Kansas City (the NCAA decamped for Indianapolis), and its national basketball tournament takes place there every year, as it has since 1937. One year in the 1970s, Slippery Rock made it into the tournament, and Slippery Rock students and supporters paraded through downtown carrying signs reading, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Slippery Rock."

Just to touch on this in order to put some of this into perspective, but using the Syracuse minimum as example due to the most familiarity, the previously mentioned 13224 zip code on the city's East Side has a black median household income of $50,739 and a black poverty rate of 13% according to 2019 5 year US census information. This means that this black median household income is above the minimum for the area, while also having a black poverty rate only 3% over the national overall figure and is about 5% below the national black poverty rate.

Keep in mind that this zip code is a healthy 32% black non Hispanic alone, but goes up to 34.3% when including black Hispanics and is 37.1% when including those black and in combination. As also mentioned previously, the zip code has an educational attainment overall of 51.9% having at least a Bachelor's degree and 32.4% for black residents 25 and older, which for the latter is around the national percentage of 33.1% for the same time period. So, this may be an example of an underrated area in terms of looking for a section with a substantial black middle class within the region.
