Medfield
The town in all the weird 60s/70s Walt Disney movies.
About as banal/generic as you can get.
Did Disney just make it up? Are there many "Medfields?"
You'd think there must be.
The only one i know of was a battlefield in the Indian wars.
The Irish settled it (mainly).
Is it shortened, from the Gaelic for "middlefield?"

Those founding fathers. I'll let someone else do Jefferson, I'll do Washington (2010 census).

Washington, DC 601,727
Washington, UT 18,761
Washington, IL 15,134
Washington, MO 13,892
Washington, PA 13,663
Washington, IN 11,509
Washington, NC 9,744
Washington, IA 7,266
Washington, NJ 6,461
Washington, NY 4,741
Washington, GA 4,134
Washington, CT 3,578
Washington, ME 1,527
Washington, KS 1,131
Washington, NH 1,123
Washington, VT 1,039
Washington, LA 964
Washington, OK 618
Washington, MA 538
Washington, AR 180
Washington, NE 150
Washington, VA 135

22 Washingtons (prounounced Worshington in a few), with 718,015 Washingtonians (Worshingtonians?).

The two biggest, DC and UT have grown rapidly the last decade, up 104K in DC and 10K in UT as of 2019 estimates, so 800K+ now.

I've always found it weird that residents of DC, Philly, and Houston all have a large, prosperous suburban county to their north with the same name. Turns out that of the four most populous MoCos, three are large metro suburbs (Maryland, Pennsylvania, & Texas), and only one (Ohio) contains a large city.

Just those named after Revolutionary War general Richard Montgomery (2010 census):
Montgomery County, Arkansas - 9,487
Montgomery County, Georgia - 9,123
Montgomery County, Illinois - 30,104
Montgomery County, Indiana - 38,124
Montgomery County, Iowa - 10,740
Montgomery County, Kansas - 35,471
Montgomery County, Kentucky - 26,499
Montgomery County, Maryland - 1,050,688
Montgomery County, Missouri - 12,236
Montgomery County, New York - 50,219
Montgomery County, North Carolina - 27,798
Montgomery County, Ohio - 535,153
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania - 830,915
Montgomery County, Virginia - 94,392
=2,760,949, or about the population of Chicago

Add in the four other MoCos not named after Richard:
Montgomery County, Alabama - 229,363
Montgomery County, Mississippi - 10,925
Montgomery County, Tennessee - 172,331
Montgomery County, Texas - 455,746
=3,619,314, or somewhat shy of the 2010 population of Los Angeles city (3.8M)... but not, of course, Los Angeles County

As a native of Middletown...Ohio...I remember meeting a fellow Middletonian, from Connecticut. Turns out there are a lot of Middletonians….like 185,000!

What other cities/place names have somewhat substantial populations if added together?
You left out Middletown, NJ (pop. 65,490)

There's about 3 or 4 Washington Townships in NJ alone.

There was actually a ranking a few years back of which Springfield is most like the Simpsons, lol. I think Springfield, PA won.

I always noticed that too. Montgomery County is a lucky county for MD and PA. I think its the wealthiest and most prosperous in MD, and 2nd in PA (Chester County, PA surpassed Montco in overall wealth rankings, but smaller economy).

Mansfield, Arkansas (1,196) losing population
Mansfield, Connecticut (25,977) losing population
Mansfield, Georgia (410)
Mansfield, Illinois (906)
Mansfield, Indiana (20)
Mansfield, Kansas N/A
Mansfield, Louisiana (4,624) losing population
Mansfield, Massachusetts (23,184)
Mansfield, Minnesota (231)
Mansfield, Missouri (1,245) losing population
Mansfield, New York (808)
Mansfield, Ohio (46,599) losing population
Mansfield, Pennsylvania (2,917) losing population
Mansfield, South Dakota (93)
Mansfield, Tennessee N/A
Mansfield, Texas (69,557)
Mansfield, Washington (343)
Mansfield, West Virginia N/A
All the cities with losing population had seen negative growth between the current and last population count.

Interesting facts:
There is also four more cities with Mansfield at the beginning of the name. One in Alaska, one in Minnesota & two in New Jersey.
The city of Mannfield, Florida is sometimes called Mansfield.
The largest Mansfield in the U.S was originally spelt Mansfeild, but after years of misspelling it was eventually changed.
The largest Mansfield in the world is located in Nottinghamshire, England with a population of 106,556 and is twin towns with three of the above cities.

There are 6 municipalities with the name Washington in NJ. 5 are townships and 1 is a borough. We used to have another township but voters chose to change the name to Robbinsville in 2008.

Here are the stats, counties and 2010 Census population for each remaining Washington.

Washington Twp, Bergen County (9,100)
Washington Twp, Burlington County (687)
Washington Twp, Gloucester County (48,559)
Washington Twp, Morris County (18,533)
Washington Twp, Warren County (6,651)
Washington Borough, Warren County (6,461) The borough is surrounded completely by the township above.
