People retire and move to lower cost states; some wealthy retire and move to no state income tax states....of those who do move, would like to see a breakout between those who do so for economic reasons vs those (wealthy) who do so by choice—if such data exists.

It’s not, however it’s fairly significant when taking into account those who choose to relocate, hence this poster’s response:

Alabama offers a property tax exemption for senior citizens

Kind of surprised Alabama gets more retirees than Georgia does. I guess the secret is getting out.

Alot of retirees want tranquility and quiet, not bustle.

I’m assuming the coast is beneficial on this score.

No doubt. I'm just surprised we beat out Georgia as it has nice coastal areas as well.

That Carolinas stat isn't how many moved. That's a NET figure.

I'd say it's significant, in terms of the Carolinas' state population growth, and for the states they're migrating from.

I think retirees are looking for small cities vs big metros, hence why SC and AL beat out GA.

For the life of me I don't get Florida... People must just really hate winter. Even the western areas people are retiring to aren't the cold side of the Interior west...

On the bright side since no country is going to actually meet their climate goals, the 'no more winter' line will swing north and FL and AZ won't be the only options in the future.

Having grown up in Florida, I never thought it was so great and just assumed that the North must be awful.

After having lived in the North for a short time and visiting it extensively, my early suspicions have been confirmed.

Kidding (mostly). I definitely prefer Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas to Florida though.

Interesting list, so they are retiring in several southern states with low GDPs per capita...
