I’ve wanted to move to the Sarasota area for a while now! Recently having seconded thoughts.. I live in a small town right outside of a larger city. We love our home, town, schools, neighbors!!! However, I have dreamed of living near the beach my whole life and really feel like I should make the move before my youngest enters middle school. The Sarasota area has become so overpriced and I’m not really sure I want to deal with the Red Sea. Thinking St.Augustine or Jupiter area. Can anyone give me some info on any of these areas? Pros/Cons? Most important thing is we want to live in a smaller town with less crime.

Sarasota is still a great place to live. Jupiter is more expensive so if cost is a concern you can eliminate that one. St. Augustine is nice, but small. If you want a smaller community it might be the right choice for you. Between the beaches I’d still take Sarasota as the sand is better, the water looks better, and it’s much warmer than St. Augustine. Red tide is periodically a problem in the gulf, but it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me personally.

Are you specifically asking for areas in Florida or are you considering outside of Florida?

Sarasota is not a good place for raising children as the entire SW Florida region is geared toward retirees and that demographic dominates.

Maryland has beaches too. So does Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, many other states.

There's nothing magical about Florida, and most people who come from "up north" are disappointed in the public schools.

If you love everything about where you are now, you'll probably be one of those people who moves to Florida then complains about how things were so much better back up north.

Move to the Delmarva coast if you have to be near the beach.

As someone who’s lived in both Delmarva and Florida, I’ll take Florida any day. Sarasota is a good place for raising a family too. It’s not all retirees there like you get further south.

You guys are both from Alabama and you're talking bad about Florida? That's pretty funny. Do you live in the real world?
