Obviously within New England Boston stands alone.

Providence and Hartford are clearly the 2 and 3 cities.

Then Bridgeport, New Bedford, Springfield etc are below.

But where would you say Worcester falls? It has grew robustly in the last decade and has had strong job growth itself.

I don’t know if it’s really independent enough so you could argue Springfield or maybe Portland is a more prominent city but it seems more put together than any outside the top 3.

I feel like New Haven is Tier 2 along with Hartford and Providence. Worcester is admittedly hard to place; I haven’t voted yet. I’m actually leaning towards “own tier” because I feel like it’s meant to be a peer of PVD or Hartford, but it’s just been soooo long since Worcester was close to being the city it was meant to be.

Concord, NH? I wouldn’t put that one in a Tier 3. It has to be Tier 4 or lower..

My personal opinion having never personally set foot in New England (but still a huge city nerd):

(ranked by overall influence)

1. Boston
(Massive gap)

2. Providence
3. Hartford
(Small gap)

4. Bridgeport
5. New Haven
(Small gap)

Rest of these are right on top of each other (in order):
6. Portland, ME
7. Worcester, MA
8. Springfield, MA
9. Manchester, NH
10. Burlington, VT

Idk, maybe I am wrong ranking these five.

(Another gap)
11. New London, CT

Runner-ups:
Barnstable, MA
Pittsfield, MA
Newport, RI
Portsmouth, NH
Lebanon, NH
Bangor, ME

Combinations:
Salem, Quincy, Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill, Framingham, Marlborough, Brockton with Boston

Fall River with Providence

Waterbury with New Haven

Yarmouth, Gorham, Biddeford with Portland, ME

Nashua with Manchester, NH

I actually think this is a great thread since #6-#10 are definitely peers and are so close to each other in comparison.

3rd tier. If you enjoy junkies in every corner of the city and strangely high number of able bodied young men loitering around the streets, then Worcester is it. Every city has got them, but Worcester seems to have more.

To me Worcester is always a great example to me of how quickly Boston’s sphere of influence and wealth actually ends. In some ways Worcester is a better representation of New England. And the constant road construction in Worcester is absolutely out of control. I swear they just do the same area again and again and again and fix nothing.

Stamford and Norwalk idk. Could be with Bridgeport or NYC. I feel like Bridgeport can only be ranked so high if it picks up all the surrounding wealthy suburbs.

Waterbury and Meridien with New Haven

New Britain, Middletown with Hartford

Norwich with New London

Are we talking city proper or MSA. If we're talking MSA, some of the cities you've listed are already in the MSA of some bigger cities.
