I have the sailors point of view. You could cruise coastal Maine every summer for a lifetime and not get to all the anchorages. Sailing Merchant’s Row off Stonington on a sunny summer day is almost a religious experience. It’s not surprising that Oregon’s biggest city is miles inland up the Columbia River. The coast has no harbors.

It’s kind of pointless if the only way you can look at it is in a photo or by chartering an airplane.

Alright then, here's a different view of the same place that can be seen right off the main road.

Also, the reason Oregon has no harbors becomes obvious when you look at a topographic map. Its coastal mountain ranges extend from the Washington border all the way down to the California border and there aren't any suitable "hinterlands" that the ports could serve. The mountains brushed up against the beaches are a major component of why the coast is so scenic.

The fact that there is no harbors is a good thing. A testimony to the rugged nature and beauty of Oregon. Less man made disturbances.
