New Orleans becomes murder capital of America, overtaking St. Louis
New Orleans has seen 52 homicides per 100,000 in 2022 as of Sept. 11.

Here are the top 4 cities with the highest murder rates in the country and it’s been that way for a while now “ unfortunately “

#1 New Orleans
#2 St Louis
#3 Baltimore
#4 Detroit

The bottom half is surprisingly

#5 Cleveland
#6 Las Vegas
#7 Kansas City
#8 Memphis
#9 Newark New Jersey

I wonder what happened to cities like Gary Indiana & Little Rock ?
How does Las Vegas rank above Memphis? The LVPD has 94 murders through 9/16?

DC is at 157. Slight decline in all crimes from last year with the notable exception being robberies and motor vehicle thefts.

I believe Gary is now too small to be on the list. The population is now like 70k...below even Lafayette Indiana.

Since Baltimore is on the list, there is zero, I mean zero homicides for a week now (last one was at 9/26).

That being said, shootings are still happening, like this one at Fells Point past Wednesday midnight that injured 2 that drawn news headline (just b/c, well, it's in Fells Point...)

Particularly for St. Louis (city) or even Baltimore (city) with that randomly drawn line. The former in particular as it's a very tiny part of the whole metro area (or even "not so great" area of the metro as there are some areas north of the airport that's, well, sketchy also).

I'll use Baltimore for example...
Within the city: 254 homicides, population (2020 census) 585708 = 43.36/100k
In Baltimore County: ~22 homicides (I don't have the exact number), population (2020 census) 854535 = 2.57/100k
Combined: 19.16/100k.

Still high but I haven't even include other counties like Howard, AA, Harford, and Carroll (since I don't have the number that I can find quickly).

GMA is about 4.3 million, I'm guessing we're at about ~40 murders so 0.93 per 100,000
Based on the list of murder victims found on HomicideCanada, I'm counting 35 for the Greater Montreal area (GMA, pop 4.3M) so far this year. 0.81 per 100 000.

I don't think folks realize Baltimore prior to 2013 had rates in the low 30s with 234 murders. That similar to DC today. I don't know where Baltimore lost it after years of progress.

Freddie Gray in 2015 is arguably when things turn way south. The recent spike due to COVID (and some would also argue the whole mess with BLM/George Floyd doesn't help) only continue its high homicide rate. Personnel shortage is also real in basically every single police departments across USA.

Richmond is down 30% in homicides this year, currently at 44/19.38 compared to around 61 this time last year; the city finished with 91/40.09 last year, this year with 89 days left is on target to finish at 58 for the year...

City geographic areas break down as follows:

East End 11/40.74 (on pace for ~14 after 27 last year)

North Side 8/22.86 (on pace for ~11 after 18 last year)
Southside 21/21.65 (on pace for ~28 sfter 33 last year)

West End 3/5.36 (on pace for ~4 after 9 last year)

Norfolk is currently at 47/20 by my count (shout out to Murph though, he has 50/21.28, we are in the same ball park). Pretty much same pace as last year, when Norfolk finished with 61; at current rate they are on track for 62 by year end...

City geographic breakdown:

Southside 5/62.5 (already matched last year's total of 5, on track for ~7 this year)

West Side 16/30.77 (already surpassed last year's 14, on track for ~21)

East Side 9/15 (on track for ~12 after last year's 23)

Northside 17/14.41 (already surpassed last year's 16, on track for ~22)

The overall City of Norfolk is on pace for last year's total, so the dramatic difference this year, is that the murders that were concentrated more on the East Side last year are dispersed into the Northside and the West Side...

Meanwhile Virginia Beach is at 15/3.28, already two above last year's 13 homicides. City on pace for ~20 this year...

Northwest VB 5/4.55
Northeast VB 3/4.17
Southwest VB 6/2.94
Southeast VB 1/2.08
