Obama. There was a feeling of resolution in high crime/lower income areas

It was bottoming out after the steady decline that started in the mid-1990's. There was a surge in 2015 and 2016, dipped slightly in 2017-2019, and then the 2020's pandemic era happened which is what we're seeing now which is showing no signs of slowing and may be a long term trend of steady increasing back towards the early 1990's crack epidemic era levels.

Obama maybe played a small part but if you want to go by what youre saying, then hope was lost after 2012 as crime started going back up in many cities after a 10+ year decline (see post above mine) and Obama stopped being seen as a crime savior because he wasnt. No president has really been.

What really happened is Mexico really broke Cartels in the 2009-2013 range. This caused a big spasm of violence as the criminal underworld which was pretty stable suddenly had a power vacuum. This then leaked up into the US and Canada

It was a long term trend that started from Clinton's time, continued through GWB, and Obama's first term. Then the trend reversed during Obama's second term, through Trump's single term (though it dipped during his first 3/4 years but 2020 happened), and now through Biden's. You can't credit or blame any president.

It was also surprising that crime still managed to decline during the Great Recession of the late 2000's. Most would have thought that crime goes up during tough economic times like in the early 1990's, but that peak was more fueled by the crack epidemic than the economy.

2011-13 were good years for St. Louis in terms of reduced numbers, but I frankly want to know what we were doing in 2003. The city only recorded 74 homicides, and it was the only time we dipped below 100 homicides in a year going all the way back to 1970. It was also our lowest homicide rate per capita as well, sitting at 21.7 per 100k.

It's way too easy to get firearms now. Gangs moved in???

I've lived in many different cities. I don't believe St. Louis feels any different from anyplace else.

I've been to St Louis.... North STL is the only place I've ever been that felt legitimately lawless to me....

North city doesn't feel anything to me. It's seems very empty and run down. Streets are totally empty. It is so sad that any city would allow itself to drop like that. Houses leaning to the side... burned up... people seem to look rough and depressed.

Parts of South and west sides of Chicago where scary and lawless. I really want to communicate parts of not all. I wouldn't say most.

Memphis seems.out of control with the lawless and violence. Everyone seems scared and have a nasty attitude. Memphis seems to take pride in being rough.

Just my observation living in three cities with bad reputations.
