I’m on the coast 25 miles east of Newport. I’m growing zone 7A. We had a record snowstorm 13 days ago. I can look out the window and see green grass. In the summer, I usually have a 20 mph ocean breeze out of the southwest so it rarely breaks 90F. It’s a much milder climate than Ithaca both in the winter and in the dog days of the summer.
Summer vacation home and tour bus Newport is very different from winter Newport. There’s a bit of a pulse from Salve Regina but Newport is pretty dead when the affluent summer people aren’t around.
In New England, the usual list is Burlington VT, Portland ME, Portsmouth NH, and maybe Northampton MA. I’ve lived in 3 of the 4. There’s not enough in Hanover NH beyond Dartmouth College. Annapolis, maybe.
If Annapolis and Portland, then Lancaster, Pa. But I will allow that Lancaster County doesn't have any places that give off the preppy/Bobo vibe found in the other cities GeoffD listed. And Lancaster City (which itself has an artsy/funky vibe) is a blue island in a red sea.
Curious to know thoughts on Newburyport, MA and Salem, MA as possible fits for a blend of Newport and Ithaca.
Newburyport seems like it could be considered arty combined with classy.
Salem seems like it could be a combo of weird + super historic.
What about Mystic, CT or Lewes, DE - would either of those be a blend of Newport and Ithaca?
I am not super familiar with any of these that I mentioned, just throwing out ideas to get some more feedback.
In terms of the bolded community, it has a historic feel, but it is smaller than both places. It is more like a Canandaigua with more of a Skaneateles look, if that helps.
I'm not sure about the other places though.
