Detroit for its great architecture, history of car manufacturing and de-industrialization, population loss and urban decay. Not that Cleveland doesn't have a reputation but Detroit is just more iconic.
It’s Detroit because of the automobile industry, first and foremost. It’s known as “Motown” for a reason. Music also plays a big role in Detroit’s identity, from the Motown of the 60s to Eminem.
I associate Cleveland with Rockefeller, he grew up there and that’s where he established Standard Oil. In more modern times, LeBron James, too. He’s from Akron (close enough) but he helped boost Cleveland’s image when he played for the Cavaliers. Tons of young Americans became aware of Cleveland just because he played there and he’s from the area.
Detroit. Coney Island hot dogs. Motown. The auto industry that had an incomparable worldwide impact on industry and personal transportation. Possibly the best collection of pre-war urban architecture in the country. Major international border.
Detroit is easily in the top 10 for strongest identity. Internationally it’s one of the best known cities in the country.
