I would put the SF/San Jose region 4th due to the importance of tech. The internet I'm using, the computer I'm typing on (Intel CPU, Nvidia GPU) a lot of all that developed by engineers in the bay area. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, smartphones (Apple), technology is an important factor in our lives and a lot of that was all done in the bay area.
I feel like this is a rehashing of the big 5. Most seem to agree that NYC, LA, Chicago, the Bay Area and DC are the most important cities in America. So I guess this is just trying to pick number 4.

Yeah..I think there is broad consensus around those being the top 5. I might even suggested Chi isn't necessarily 3rd when it comes to being a center of power and influence. It has a broadly diversified economy with good universities, a large futures trading center, and several important corporate HQs. But isn't really a center of innovation like SF, a cultural power house like LA or a national capital.
DC's CSA, which includes Baltimore, is just under 10 million people. It's already larger than Chicago's CSA and is now ranked 3rd largest.
The rest of the 10 largest CSAs are:
The Bay Area 9.6 million
Boston 8.3 million
Dallas 8.2 million
Houston 7.4 million
Philadelphia 7.2 million
Atlanta 6.9 million
DC doesn’t need Baltimore to make a claim for number 4 and if one must say DC, don’t exclude Baltimore.
