Not sure if this is the right forum to ask, but my family and I are looking to move to the Midwest. My husband will be working from home and I will be a SAHM. We have a 3 year old and 1 year old, so would ideally like a place with good schools, and maybe even some parks within walking distance. We would like a place within an hour to the airport. Would also like to buy a house with a good sized yard. My sister currently lives in Minneapolis, so was originally looking around there, but open to suggestions!
Try Northfield, MN. Also, Hutchinson, Cannon Falls, Hastings might fit what you are looking for. If you have the money, Can’t go wrong with the shops, historic homes and natural beauty of Stillwater.
Cedar Rapids metro, especially Robins and Marion. So many different neighborhoods with good schools. The airport is 5-7 minutes from downtown Cedar Rapids.
Another suggestion is Mount Vernon just north of Iowa City (home to the University of Iowa) and also Solon. Lake McBride and the Coralville reservoir is nearby. Excellent schools. Airport is maybe 15-20 minutes from downtown Iowa City (same airport as Cedar Rapids).
Most Midwest College towns would probably fit your needs, I have spent time in Ames, Columbia MO, Champaign/Urbana, Iowa City and Normal and found them to be pleasant and affordable - I am sure the other big state school towns would be similar
I’d highly recommend Eau Claire, WI. It’s an easy hour and a half drive to MSP. The town has beautiful parks and bike trails, especially along the Chippewa and Eau Claire Rivers. The whole area has about 120k and all the shopping one would need. (Even getting a Costco in the next year). It’s very safe, friendly people, affordable homes, good schools. The town is growing and downtown has really come alive in the last decade with a big emphasis on music and the arts. Only downside is winter, but that is no different than other places in the Midwest.
