And we travel, a lot.
Crazy. I think I saw that Internationally born Bostonians are up 19% in the last two decades. I’ll double check that later.

Boston has Massachusetts state laws while New York has New York State laws, for just one of a bazillion things.

Surfing
NYC has Long Beach. Boston has Devereux Beach (a few minutes out of the City). Both Cities are blessed with overhead surf, w/ possibly getting *more than Los Angeles County typically sees during the year.
Serious/quality surfing can be had at both venues.
Bonus: Devereux is actually blessed w/ offshore winds through most of a typical Noreaster. And Long Beach is one of the first spots to go offshore once a storm begins heading out to sea.
the clip shows Long Beach benefiting w/ Sept light offshore winds.

(if we're honest that's not saying much; it's not called Baywatch for nothing)

Skiing/Snowboarding
Both effectively have skiing, But Boston edges out NYC in that,
you can take in a few ski/board runs before work at Blue Hills or
even more decent quality a few miles beyond 495.....
For NYC, it's probably Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ
being the closest i can think of.
The dedicated skier/boarder will occasionally see decent snow
without having to go all the way out to the Pocono's or NH/VT mts.

There are several closer. You have Big SNOW at American Dream in the Meadowlands. It's North America's first and only, indoor, year-round ski and snowboard facility.

Another one closer than Mountain Creek is Campgaw in Mahwah. The 'Gaw is a nice starter mountain and a straight shot up Rt. 17 or 4.

None of the ones I listed are that good but they are local. But it's not like Boston has any good skiing in its local environs either. Blue Hill is their version of Campgaw. For NYC you would have to go 2 hrs north to Windham or Bellayre to get some nice skiing.

Wachusett is actually pretty good.

Id say Boston MSA>New York MSA for skiing (As a skiier)

As a lifelong skiier I'd say it's debatable. Vermont and then Upstate NY are the epicenters of skiing on the East coast so I'd say these two MSA's are pretty much a wash.

Symphony Hall is Boston is far better than anything in NY. The classical music scene in Boston is awesome. NY has a much bigger opera company at the MET, but Boston has a smaller company called Odyssey Opera that does some very rare pieces.

Whiteface is decent, but I’ll take Sugarloaf and Bretton.

As a general statement, if we are being not picky, the better skiing is closer to Boston than NYC. If for no other reason, because VT is an hour or two closer.
