Detroit's recent mayor has been doing a great job of cleaning the city up. Still plenty of work to do, but I barely hear Detroit in the news like how I hear about Chicago, Philly, Memphis, St Louis, Baltimore, NOLA, DC, etc

It's the poster child of a city that hit rock bottom. People will say/write "We must get XYZ in order before we become the next Detroit".
I don't think the city will ever shed its reputation for crime, economic collapse, and urban decay - at least not in my lifetime unless another city completely bottoms out to that level. Gary ticks those boxes, but it's too small of a city. The only major city nearing that level is St. Louis and nobody hardly brings it up in favor of Chicago, Baltimore, Philly, SF, etc;

Memphis is another one, and it's about the same population as Detroit in the city proper.

Since you mention Gary, its homicide number also dropped a lot compare to the peak. No idea what's the number this year, but per capita it wouldn't surprised me if Indy is worse.
The joke about Gary is that "they ran out of people to kill". That being said, it is still very rundown and depressing.

Indy is nowhere near catching Gary's murder rate. Not even at it's lowest. Gary did just elect a new Mayor, but before he was Mayor, it was said how much the county and state of sabotaging anything to actually benefit Gary for Gary. Btw, I'm from Gary. Born and Raised.
Another murder in Boston, this time in Allston. Unfortunately, this snaps the nearly 40 day streak without a murder.
31.
Lol i remember it made national news couple years ago when Chicago went a full 24 hours with no homicides. Things are really different in parts of the country.
